I returned from holiday the other day to find a letter in my postbox saying BT had renewed my "unlimited evening and weekend plan renewable contract" but forgot to tell me about it. They're sorry for the mistake.

Meanwhile I was under the impression that my BT contract would run for a minimum of 12 months after which I could cancel it at any time (with some notice), but now it seems that rather it's automatically extended in 12-month intervals. I guess that's the "unlimited evening and weekend plan" and I missed some of the fine print.

Anyway it seems the one option I have to avoid the extension is to "cancel my contract" within 21 days, but I don't want that either, I just want to be able to cancel if at some time in the next 12 months I decide I don't want a landline anymore.

Also, I was away for a while and I'm not sure when that letter was sent (it's simply dated "June 2009"), so the 21 days are sort of meaningless. I'll contact them of course, but if someone wise and clever could quickly give me a bit of quick advice on where I stand, I'd appreciate that. Maybe someone else has tried this? It looks like a form letter.
