When you sign on for job seekers allowance you have to declare if you have done any paid or unpaid work.

Whats the situation if you have done unpaid work?

In this case a friend is signing for jobseekers but worked in his uncle shop for the day on Saturday because his uncloe was ill. He did it as a favour, did not take any payment and intends to declare it when he goes to sign but is worried his benefit may be affected.

If he says he did it for nothing as a favour due to a sudden illness they may ask for proof so if possible go prepared with a letter from his uncle stating he did not receive any payment for it.

Most people don't bother to say if they didn't get paid but a lot say they didn't get paid when they did.

Its up to him at the end of the day whether he tells them or not.

If I was going to tell them I would take some sort of proof with me that I didn't get pay.

I must admit I have only just come of jobseekers allowance and never once was I asked have you done any work paid of not since you last signed on.

Hope thats helped.
