Just thought I'd share this with you guys, basicaly for the past two months Halifax have been sending me letters addressed to someone who has never lived at this address, mainly about him not using his credit card enough, since then it's moved up to details of his joint account and now today I received a cheque book in his name!

I've rung Halifax three times, however they tell me unless I go into branch with some photo ID and prove I'm not this guy, theyre going to keep sending me his cheque book (and presumably eventualy a card and PIN)

I know I should go into branch, but its a good 45 minutes from here and I dont see why they cant just stop sending stuff.

I feel much better now. I wonder if a newspaper would be interested in a story?

Have you been opening the mail?

Some of it, not the cheque book. It has my address on it and Ive lived here since the place was built.

Look if it doesn't have your name on it then you should be crossing out the details and writing on the envelope "not known at this address" and send it back.

Fair enough, but if something comes in a plain envelope (No Bank Logos and only a PO Box return address) then I dont know if its a bank statement. And I have a very unique address I assure you.

If it doesn't have your name on it, do you think it is being sent for your attention or for you to open?

Do you think there might be a reason banks do not send out post in envelopes with the full name and logo on it with return PO Box addresses?

You need to send it back. Newspapers would be interested if the statements were sent in an envelope addressed to you and it was happening on a regular basis. Send it back to them and if you want write a letter to the same effect to them.

When I live in the only house for about 3 miles each way, which is newly built, and I have a very very unique address then yes, I do wonder when a letter comes how they got my address, its not a mis-spelling and it cant be confused for anything else. Perhaps I shouldnt have opened it, but perhaps they should be a bit more careful about where they send post.

well if the envelope says Smythe and your name is Smith then I agree but if your name is smith and the name on the envelope is windsor then clearly it is the wrong person. I'd send it back and/or perhaps write to HBOS with the details and specifically state that they need to stop sending this person's mail to your address since they have never lived at that address.

Thats what Im going to have to do, my point is that despite me putting the first four letters back in the post they've kept coming. Now, as Ive said I have a unique and new address, so short of someone going into Halifax and claiming that its their address I dont see how they could have got it.

Presumably they do check....?

I opened the fifth one as I wanted to see what the hell it was that was so important.

did you cross out your address and write not at this address or not known at this address?

I put 'Not Known' and assumed that would be sufficient.

This is gonna sound stupid but did the envelope with the words "not known" come back to you?

if the mail is ariving with no return address you are quite right to open this mail....it can be stopped by sending the mail directly to the ICO explaining what you have said here that they are ignoring your pleas for the mail to stop arriving at your doorstep..it will then take only a couple of weeks for this to stop and will put halifax in really hot water .....
