My AA insurance run out on the 25th June. I attempted to contact the AA to cancel as the renewal was considerably more than other companies quoted. After spending about 20 minutes in a phone queue I gave up and sent an email, which bounced back. I cancelled my direct debit and took a new policy.

I tried several more times and didn't manage to get through. Finally today, 5 working days later, I managed to get hold of someone after spending 35 minutes waiting, the first person couldn't deal with my cancellation and I spent another 10 minutes in the queue.

Finally I cancelled the policy and was told I had to pay £17.30 for a cancellation fee. Then I was told they hadn't managed to collect my final payment, which they tried to take on the 25th June. Now looking at the agreement it doesn't actually say the final date of payment, just 10 payments starting from xx date. I had forgotten the last payment would be taken after the insurance lapsed. They have made a £12 charge and apparently are sending a default notice. I paid the last payment today, but disputed the £12.

Do insurance companies put these sort of things onto your credit record? I don't want a default for something so trivial. Also is £12 a fair fee for a cancelled direct debit?

I complained to a manager about the excessive wait times to cancel a policy and was told their call centre has been very busy and I should have waited however long it took to get through.

Also, forgot to add. I cancelled within the 14 day cooling off period that the AA state in writing. The policy renewal divided by 365 x 7 days is £7, not £17.
