I'm currently working 31 hours per week with Sainsbury's. Reduced my hours from 39 hours a week to free up time to study a part time course. Now taking the course full time at College, so needing to drop hours again. I'm wondering where I stand on this request. I'm hoping it will be a simple reduction and move in part time work hassle free but recently had issues with my performance on the department. Mainly it's down to the team as a whole but it still goes against me. If I request hours and they simply refuse to help me out, to say.. get rid of me. Where do I stand?

Hello and Welcome,

Do you have any children ? as this will help.

EDIT: Sorry, I'm going off-line, but Sainsburys are a massive company, so I can't see there being any problem.

If you have children or any immediate family who are dependant on you you can put the request in writing. Any response they gave back would then have to include a definitive business reason why they would be unable to accept the change in hours.

If not then it's just a question of trying to compromise. Suggest taking hours where staffing is always an issue (if it fits in with college obviously).

To be honest though, it seems as if you're looking for a problem before there is one...and hopefully they'll just accept your request anyway.
