Hi all,

I hope you can help me.

I bought a 37inch LG tv brand new from a shop online 18 months ago.

I have complained to them as between 2-4 hours the screen goes black! Sometimes the sounds stays on but sometimes it goes off too..

It doesnt go into the standby mode but green light stays on. its very weird.

The shop advised me to speak to LG. As the warranty is for 1 year I am out of warranty but surely there is a major fault with my tv and i can get it repaired or replaced free of charge as tvs should last more than 18 months!!!

Please help!

Thank you

you have ofcourse re-seated the scart lead at both ends

i'd take it out and turn it around, both of these faults are common with a scart lead that gets angled half out the socket.

anyhow.

yes you should query this, and the being out of warranty makes no diff,

it should last a resonable time acording to SOGA, typically 3-5yrs for a telly but don't quote anyone!

what you will actually find is that you will prob have to pay an independent eng to varify the fault.

then LG should repair it & you will also get the fee back.

it might be an idea to browse the net and see if others get the same with this model, cause if it is a recognise manu fault then under SOGO 'unfit for purpose' you should be give a new one.

i'd contact LG..

others will say its the sellers problem, but as its online stuff it might prove easier to cutout the middle man

!

SOGA is only effective against the seller; LG have no liability or duty under SOGA to undertake any repair. If they do, then they will want paying and the seller is liable to pay.

FerretloverUK, you have to take this up with the seller - online or not.

It's subsumed in SOGA 2003. Nothing new.

have received email today after chasig saying they want £89 to repair it. i chased & asked what was wrong with tv & they said it needs parts for the power supply & fault with PCB supply. where do i stand in regards of getting tv repaired for free cos surely its an inherant fault & parts like that should last more than 18 months???

email from whom the seller or LG?

this should be paid for by the seller under soga

'inherent' faults are those that the manu recognises are a fault of that model and as such should result in a free replacement/repair. i take it this is not the case.

from the seller. they are saying as its nearly 2 years old we need to prove the problem existed from day one of purchase.

we have since been told that the tv was damaged by the courier on delivery to the seller. (corner broken). THEY SAY it was because it wasnt packaged properly. We wrapped as follows; polythene bag around whole of tv to protect it, then loadsa industrial bubble wrap then cardboard outside and corners. THEN... all covered with a whole roll of "FRAGILE" tape. When courier collected we told him it was a tv & to be very careful. The seller stated that we cannot claim from them or the courier as it wasnt in a box!!! It was better packaged than if it was in a box!!! They have also glued the corner back on without our consent.

day one..rubbish!

so they have tested it then?

as for the damage, i wouldn't really worry too much as you should be getting a replacement anyhow.

all they have told is is that they will charge us 50% of the repair cost, approx £43 as a good will gesture for the damage to the corner of the tv. Nothing mentioned about any replacement at all.

They are adamant & getting snotty with it now saying the component that needs to be replaced is NOT an inherant fault.

which is what was already guessed in posts 16/17 so no change.

don't think you should pay for the drop damage.

as for the main fault, it has gone wrong, it is within what is typically deemed as a time that the produce 'should' last for.

can't see how they cannot repair under soga

Try Googling "problems with LG......" whatever your model number is. Maybe, just maybe, you are not alone and others have experienced the same problems with this model. If so then you have an manufacturing fault....

well I stand to be corrected but.

The item you purchased has to reasonable and fit for purpose and durable. Therefore under the sales and goods act as amended you should be able claim if you feel the TV is of sufficient high value and your expectation is for it to last 3 to 5 years for instance. Therefore you could claim the TV was not of sufficient quality and consequently the shop is in breach.

"Thanks to the new European Regulations, UK law now offers greater protection for consumers against products which develop faults within the first 6 months. The assumption is now that if it breaks down within this time period it cannot have conformed to the contract specification when purchased and you have the right to an automatic repair or replacement. Having said this, items which should last several years can still break down after this six month period. If the retailer or manufacturer’s warranty has run out, the shop is often quick to say there is nothing they can do before attempting to sell you an extended warranty. This is misleading. If you buy something which should last 7 years but breaks down after a year and a day, you can still claim it was of poor quality in reference to the durability aspect. In this respect it will help to know how long items such as washing machines or printers should last. You can get this information relevant trade association"

taken from here How long can you expect something to last? | Consumer Information

hope that helps and good luck.
