My neighbour called today. he told me he had a call yesterday from a woman called Joanne in Glasgow asking if a Mr *** **** stil lived at number 10 ( next door to him).

I havent a clue what it may be about, but she left him a phone number to pass on if he knew me ( hes clued up like me and denied all knowledge of me).

Although they wouldnt give him any personal info, surely it must be wrong for them to be able to do this?

Like I said, dont know what its about yet, but Im sure I will get a letter from some sleazy DC within the next week.

Any suggestions anyone as to any course of action when they get in contact?

its a dca on a phishing trip but ringing random people is a no no and should be reported that is of course if you want to ring the number just to see which sleaze company it was

It's not often I find myself able to give some feedback (still elarning the ropes with DCAs!) BUT apparantly the OFT has debt collection guidelines which 'may' assist. It seems also the OFT has guidelines on this activity of 'tracing' and it seems DCAs are allowed to do this as long as they do not disclose who they are, subject matter etc. BUT it's supposed to be used as a means to confirm your address. In my case the DCA contacted neighbour after my truecall m/c blocked very first call. They did not check electoral roll or write to me before contacting my neighbour. I only found out about the phone call when I SAR'd the DCA and it said they had contacted my neighbour. My neighbour said they phoned to ask if X still lived nextdoor as they had a parcel to deliver......

So they did not reveal themselves as DCAs except made an old woman quite suspicious of who they were and possibly start wondering what really was going on.

OFT does not investigate complaints but have logged my complaint on this matter against OFT based I think on the fact they really did not 'need' to use tracing to find my details as they had them already, am on electoral roll and they should have written to me first (in my opinion).

I am considering doing a separate complaint to FOS but that coudl well be a waste of time to be honest and take too long.

I am not sure but I think the asking neighbour to pass on a message to phone them is also unacceptabel according to gudelines BUT this is memory recall from somethign I read on Cag. Perhaps again it also depends on what the message was and what was said?

Hopefully soembody on here will post any relevant links to suitable guidelines to assist you?

Hi Merlin,

Here's the link to the OFT page on Debt Collecting guidance:

The Office of Fair Trading: Debt collection practices

Just keep a note of the date, time and details for now ready for a complaint when they rear their ugly heads. Have you Googled the phone number?

When/if they write, next step is the "prove it" letter HERE

Keep us posted :)

If it is a dca complain to oft trading standards and ico as the oft has rulled that geting neighbours to pass messages on to you is a big no no as they gave out a number to call back on it would not take much for a nosy neighbour to find out about confidential matters

Sounds like a message to me. What was the number? Was it Link?

In any event, worth dropping the OFT a note, I reckon.

Thanks for the great replies folks - very much appreciated.

Somewhere in this house is the piece of paper my neighbour gave me with the phone number on - as soon as I remember where I put it, I will post it up!

In the meantime, I think Im pretty safe in assuming that sometime within the next week or so Im going to get a DCA bog-standard threatogram.

So when i know - you will know!

CCA request will fly off again!

Just to let you all know - thanks to this site and its wonderful members, to date Ive managed to rid myself of just over £9000 of debt.

I do have on problem though that happened before I found this site.

I will put this in a new post.

Thanks all.

Ok found it - 0141 2721641. Done a search and its Response Credit Management. Apparently its some sleazy little firm that fish for info for the bigger companies. Looks like they are at it a lot too from what Ive read on Google. Loads of people posting re calls to their neighbours.

Dont suppose any complaints would be listened too. So will wait till they get in touch with me and sort it myself!

Hi, merlin.

The Inland Revenue sent my neighbour a letter, asking if they knew where I was

Out of order !!!

I phoned them and they said they did not have a clue what I was on about.

So there's a lot of them at it

Regards.

Scott.

Hi Scott,

do you have the letter? Its one thing that these devious little creeps masquerade as friends, postal services, parcel deliverers etc, but its quite another to pose as a Government body - especialy the Inland Revenue! Believe me, I would have some damn good fun with that one!:)

Hi,

I actually think it was the Inland Revenue, but god knows why they did it, I've never moved house in 14 years, so why they were looking for me is a mystery.

They letter actually had 'recovery division' or something similar on it, my neighbour now thinks I'm hiding from the Tax man

Scott, you should report them straight away to TS, the OFT, ICO and your MP. Government departments doing this kind of thing would be loved by the media... ;)
