I have recently been told that I will have to take a 30% pay cut or possibly be made redundant. They wanted a decision straight away, I told them I would let them know as soon as I had look at my overall financial options.

The next day , a Friday I was again asked for an answer I told them I needed the weekend to think about it. Monday morning I was again asked and reluctantly agreed. I was told when the things improve they would review the position. I asked for a it in writing and the letter I received has not given any timescale as to when, or even if after a review I would return to my original salary.

I am writing a letter of reply stating that having agreed to the pay cut, it is volantary and for a period of 3 months. There is nothing in my contract of employment with regard to this. I have been with the company for over 6 years.

My main question is should I have had a longer period to decide before I replied and do they have to accept what is in my written reply.

If this is a limited company, you can get a copy of the accounts and see how they are doing, that should give you an idea or a warning that it might be time to find another job or they are just using the recession to con you.
