I've had the personal detail argument with my prepay credit card company. I get a new card every year and I had to activate it last year. They rang me and started asking me stuff like DOB, mothers maiden name etc to verify my identity. They were most peeved and insulted when I pointed out that I had no means of verifying they were who they said they were, refused to supply the details they wanted and said I'd call them back at a time that was convenient for me. And they just didn't seem to get it at all. I also know that banks here do call up and verify account holders ID with similar questions and I always advise people to decline the request and either go online, call back or, best option, go to their branch. First time I've heard of something like this though, and I'll pop it up on my message board to warn folks.
