Yesterday I had a call from HSBC, the person on the end of the phone told me I had missed 1 payment on my credit card (the previous week). He asked if I could pay not just the missed payment but also the coming months payment. I explained that I had been out of work for 2 months but was expecting to start a well paid job in the coming few weeks, but I could could make a token payment of £10. What happened next shocked me.

The person told me he was closing the account immediately and to cut the card up. Then there was threats of default notices. So much for a listening bank. I was then told on the phone you have money in your bank account so why can you not pay off the credit card. I told him this money is for the rent. (my current account and credit card are with the same bank). Then when it came to paying the £10 off the card he took this directly from my bank account, I did not read out my debit card details out to transfer the money.

The job is in Ireland and how they have treated me I would love to just walk away leaving the debt, are there reciprocal debt recovery agreements between ROI and UK?

They are allowed to offset from one account to pay another, so it would be wise for you to open another 'parachute' account with a totally unrelated banking group such as the Co-operative, otherwise you may find that they are deducting the full amount for the card from your current account, leaving you potless and incurring excess charges on two accounts.

I agree with cerberusalert, best thing to do is shift your account asap.
