Hi,

I am in a right mess. I owe the following payday loan companies about 4000. (Poundstillpayday, quickquid, unclebuck, payday express, payday uk,1monthloan,wonga).

I havent paid any of them this month. Fees and interest being added all the time?

What can i do, i am in total despair.

Sounds like we are in a similar situation.

So far I have gleamed the following:

1) Cancel any DDs that are due and/or contact your bank to make sure that these are not reinstated.

2) Report your card as lost or stolen, this will stop them from taking money as when they want to.

3) Contact each company IN WRITING and explain that your circumstances have changed and you are unable to continue with the agreed/anticipated repayments (which are usually just the roll over fees) and propose a realistic monthly figure that you can stick to.

+

3a) Provide income/expenditure details, stating that you have spoken to a debt management company or CAB and been advised that these loans do not constitute a priority debt.

+

3b) Request a settlement figure and ask for the account to be placed in dispute if necessary

4) Probably the most important for peace of mind- Remove your contact numbers from their records, swap to a second PAYG mobile if needs be. Request all future correspondance in writing.

5) Stick to your guns. Don't speak to them unless you wan't to even then request confirmation of everything in writitng.

You will no doubt get a flurry of calls and emails. PoundsTillPayday are the worst by all accounts. Some rottweiler with lipstick was calling and texting me like crazy when they cocked up taking a repayment a while ago but they are all talk and very little action. Their intention is to scare or bully you into paying them for a quiet life but stick to your guns.

If you need some support on this I would happily go through it with you as I need to reduce my payments by at least £200 a month and pay these blasted things off.

I worked out that by borrowing £2k over a year and refinancing each month I would pay over £7k in interest and none of the capital so something has to be done.

Hi,

Thankyou so much for your reply. I am writing the letters now. Poundstillpayday did bully me last month and i borrowed the money of my dad to pay them. I then stupidly reloaned. I will ,however , be much stronger this time. I have changed my mobile, as i got fed-up of the voicemails.

I cant believe that they are allowed to trade.

Well done, let me know how you get on.

I will be doing my letter(s) this weekend when I have some time on my hands so will probably be a few days behind you!

Feels good to be doing something proactive though doesn't it?

Soon they will be but a distant bad memory.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Your Ref : xxxxxxxx

I regret to inform you that I am no longer able to maintain minimum payments on the above account.

I have set out an outline of my Income/Expenditure below, which details my present financial circumstances. As you can see from these figures, I am only able to offer you £xx per month at this time in line with my other creditors and would therefore be grateful if you could suspend all interest/charges until such times as I can resume normal payments.

For your information, I have today credited the account with £xx and will continue to do so each and every month until further notice (amend this if you're unable to pay anything now).

I can only apologise for being unable to maintain the minimum payments and hope that you will see this letter as a sincere attempt to deal with my situation in a responsible way.

I would also like to state that I whilst I am not willing to entertain any callers and/or agents in connection with your company, I will nevertheless ensure that my payment reaches you by post within the timescales you currently use. However, if you would prefer these payments to be made direct to a bank account of your own, then I would be grateful for a payment book to be posted to me by return.

Yours faithfully,

xxxxxxx

  • 2 weeks later...

Letters went off last week.

Today is payday.....

So far from the companies concerned:

Uncle Buck - Currently negotiating fixed monthly repayment

EPDL - Accepted my proposal with no fuss

Quick Quid - Offered a major counter to my proposal (2.5 x what I offered), but will defer first payment until end of May at no extra charge.

Pounds Till Payday (The worst, I hear!) - Will not acknowledge my letter(s) or email and have asked me to call their customer services department as this "can only be agreed over the phone" (Bull***t! If the other three will accept letters/emails then why not you?) On a bit of a high at the moment due to how easy it has been so will probably call them later.

Please PM me if you want any advice on addresses or tactics for the above.

UPDATE.

Have spoken to Pounds Till Payday who refuse to set up a payment plan as my offer of £100 per month against a balance of £910 would take too long to clear.

Unlike the other three they have said that they WILL add default charges (as is their policy) and an Account Manager (some fat whiny !!!!! sitting in a cubicle somewhere with a name like Suki) will attempt to contact me to resolve the issue. If at the end of the month the balance is still outstanding (which, unless I win the lottery, it will be!) then they will pass the account to their DCA, Clarity.

I have read that Clarity are pretty reasonable to deal with so I will put the money I was willing to pay PTP this month to one side and offer them two months money next month.

Sooooooo.....

PayDay loans are obviously to be avoided, but if you DO go down this route, like any other debt, don't ignore it. Be proactive. I have had a 75% success rate in negotiating a repayment plan.

Write to/Email them explaining that you cannot pay the requested amounts. Offer a reasonable payment and ask for the total to be frozen.

Be prepared to negotiate.

If possible change/remove your contact details on their website. Delete work numbers etc. I have a PAYG mobile set up just for these guys, so I know who is likely to be calling even if the number is witheld.

Keep copies of everything.

Cancel Direct Debits and "Lose" debit cards, HSBC issued my new one in 3 days so you won't be without for two long.

If you are using online banking check that they don't try and set up the DDs again.

Tell them that your bank will no longer allow DDs on your account, so payment has to be by Standing Order, payment book or even PayPal.

You can use a prepaid credit card just for this purpose. They cannot take money from it if there is nothing on there so only load up just before a payment is due, just in case.

Write down how much the loan is for and the reloan cost. Add these together to give an "outstanding balance". Each month you can reduce figure by your payment instead of knowing that you have "rolled over" and paid nothing off. This will cheer you up no end as you will see the totals reduce quickly.

And finally,

Avoid Pounds Till Payday like the plague.

Hi there.

Report your card stolen/lost. Make sure that you cancel direct debits etc.

If possible change your bank account, but if it is too late to do it for this month then in writing instruct yiur bank that they are not to accept payments from these people.

Contact the companies, explain tuat you are unable to pay, work out what you can reasonabl afford each month and pay them that amount.

Finally, remember you are not alone :)

Hi there i have rang the bank and put a stop on my bank card so the card is now useless. On my online banking it is not showing a direct debit linked to wonga and quickquid, so does that mean because these companies are unable to claw back any money off my now useless debit card, and it is not showing a direct debit they will be unable to take any money out of my account!!!! Please help, there is 2 days till the loans are due!!!!

I have just rang my bank to cancel my card. Made up a story about paying phone bill ect. She said they should still be able to take money.

B****

I have now set up a standing order to leave my account to my savings account on payday. Now normally whats happens is that every other standing order i have goes out on pay day so i am just hoping my wages transfers to my savings account before the vultures get it

I think the easiest thing to say and please anyone who reads this do not take offence, but we are all just giving each other advice. It works for some people and other it does not. From experience I had a PDL with WDA I cancelled my card and DD however they still managed to take the payment on my halifax debit card. However with my current bank LLoyds, i got a new debit card mid way through last month and on payday all the pdls called me to take the payment from my new card as the old one no longer worked. So i have my fingers crossed and i will see what happens.

Again if anyone takes this in offence please i am not meaning it. some wonderful advice gets passed around, it mauy work for one but not for others
