I took out a phone with orange on a 2 year contract. After 2 months I lost my job and couldn't afford the line rental. I rang them and tried to stall payment until I started my new job but they weren't having any of it. They've now cut the phone off and passed my account to a debt collectors who want the line rental for the full 2 year contract. Is there anything I can do about this?

Many thanks

Your only option is to pay up. That's the whole point of a 'contract' it places an obligation on both parties to keep to their commitment. As you've discovered, if you cannot guarantee their money for 24 months taking out a contract is a risky business. It's most unlikely they'll actually take you to court, but the real damage will be to your credit file. You may still be able to transfer the contract to a third party, look out for the Cellswap UK website, it might just give you an option for release.

they are in full right to do this.. it is a legally binding contract which you have agreed to pay and if they see straight out you cannot pay then they are under no obligation to provide a service to you which you will not be able to pay but are legally allowed to ask for the basic line rental for the full duration of the contract!
