If its a 6 speed Boxster, syncro problems aren't unheard of. Mostly 2nd gear, which was said earlier,as it's the gear which takes the most punishment.I've heard of quite a few cases of Porsche replacing the entire transmission for these problems, free of charge under warranty, and with a Porsche courtesy car. May be too late now as another specialist has been in there. Syncro problems usually show up in their early stages by a "snick" or grind when engaging gear, and gradually get worse. In my opinion if it happened suddenly,it would be a case of damage or component failure rather than wear and tear. Always a good idea to replace a clutch if the gearbox is out due to the labour costs involved if one is needed later, but I agree 100% that clutch drag would affect the lower gears far more, and would be ver noticeable!

Well we have been to court and the judge seemed to be more in our favour than theirs. He sort of indicated that it would not be unreasonable for them to pay for the repairs and the hire car but not the finance payments and warranty refund. The next step is to see a mediator in four weeks and if we cant come to an agreement it will go to full hearing! The judge sugested the mediator and he said it would be costly going to full hearing and bringing both experts in! So many thanks again to you all, we seem to be a little bit further on ...... only taken a year to get this far!

For a large car supermarket they turned up at court looking a like a couple of scruffs lol

Many thanks again xx

Hi Jan,

I'm not aware that they are however they have been recruiting recently in Scotland for supposed "engineers or experts" as they like to think they are. Look at jobsite .co.uk and in the search engine stick automotive and location Scotland and it will pop up from Nov6th I think.

Also look at the website dekra-expert.co.uk carefully.

In the FAQ's as you page down to the bottom there is a question about which cars they won't examine and funnily enough..........Porsche is one of them.

all they need is basic city and guilds and they work from home so would not suprise me if the engineer they used was know to someone at the dealership! hubby goin to ring dekra tomorrow and ask why they have carried out an inspection on a porsche an why it such a bull **** report and that when he has finished suing delearship he will sue them too........effing farce!

DEKRA in the UK is getting like this "good garage scheme". I thought of looking at them for work but when saw their entry requirements thought of my septic tank overflowing.

Now if it goes to a hearing let me know as I can rip their report apart.

It's quite outrageous!!

How did you get the link between the two and what's the relevance?

Hi

I found the info on the internet, when a lot of people have booked an AA report the dreaded Dekra engineer has turned up so they must sub out to them! I will post the dekra report later but basically they are saying that i cant drive!

Many thanks

Jan

Csnt scan report so this is what dekra actually said! Bearing in mind we only lost 5th gear

I was told by the repairer that the vehicle was found to have problems with selection of gears. It was said that in particular it was difficult to engage and disengage 2nd and 5th gear. They had removed the gearbox and clutch. The gearbox had been dismantled

I examined the components and found the following

1. The 5th gear wheel had four of its dog teeth broken off. The 5th gear synchromesh ring had light long term wear present to all three drive pegs. All other interanl gearbox components were in satisfactory condition with only normal wear present

2. The clutch pressure plate drive surface had a mottled appearance due to many areas of blue discolouration. Such an appearance indicates the clutch had overheated. normally it should be uniform silver colour.

3. The clutch centre plate friction linings were heavily worn and discoloured black. The linings were worn close to their securing rivits. The appearance was also consistant with the clutch having been overheated.

Conclusion

The damage to the 5th gear is an interanl gearbox failure. Evidence indicated this to have been caused by defective operation of the clutch which is located outside the gearbox. The clutch condition showed that it had been subject to overheating. This is often due to a condition known as clutch drag- the clutch fails to disengage fully even when the clutch pedal is fully depressed. This causes difficulty in selection of gears. The driver has to use excessive force to select gears. The would explain why the dog teeth on the 5th gear broke. the function of the dog teeth is to enable selection and the transmit drive to the main helical cut cut.

The gearbox failed as a result of defective operation of the clutch. it is likely that the clutch had not been operating correctly for sometime prior to gearbox failure. The deterioration in the clutch operation would have been gradual and was not due to sudden failure.

so thats the dekra report and please bear in mind that we have the clutch and it if still serviceable and could have gone back in the car! below is what my guy made of the dekra report! The guy i got came recommended by a porsche specialist.

At you request i have been asked to comment on a report compiled by **** of dekra expert. In the observations section he states that the transmissions company informed him that the vehicle was found to have problems with the selection of gears, particulary it was diffiucult to engage and disengage 2nd and 5th gears.

At the time of my inspection i was imformed by the transmissions co they only had experienced problems selecting and disengaging 5th gear. The other forward and reverse gears had normal gear selection and initially they thought the fifth gear selection problem was a result of incorrect gear linkage adjustment.

Dekra state the only damage to the gearbox components was four dog teeth that had brokend off 5th gear. The remaining components had normal wear, this was also my observation.

Dekra then go on the conclude the damage of the dog teeth is as a result of clutch drag. if clutch drag is present this can result in difficulty in selecting gears, most promiently when the vehicle is stationary and when selecting 1st and reverse gears. Clutch drag is when the clutch does not fully disengage when the clutch pedal is fully depressed, with the vehicle stationary one set of gears inside the gearbox are still turning resultin in difficulty in selecting gears.

If dekras theory is correct this problem would affect all the gears not just 5th gear. There was no evidence of any undue wear or damage to the remaining dog teeth on the 5th gear or any other gear. Continula difficulty in selecting gears resulting from a clutch defect would result in damage to the leading edge on all the dog teeth- this was not evident.

There has been a mechcanical failure of the 5th gear dog teeth- further metallurgist tests will be required to confirm the type of damage.

In my opinion the failure of the 5th gear is not due to clutch drag and is a result of mechcanical failure.

sorry its a long post but now you are totally in the full picture.......thanks again janb

Hi Jan,

Yes we had seen it earlier on on the thread which we took apart then.

What I still can't get clear is why faced with the evidence they are still defending.

What I do know from experience is that the judges suggestion for mediation is a standard request. I think it stems from some ruling Denning made years ago.

Do you still have the broken synchro (dog) ring?

Overheating or blue does NOT mean there is clutch drag. You can get exactly the same effect by M25 driving in rush hour (or any town driving) where you are on and off the clutch and a multiple of other reasons like pulling away on a steep hill. Discolouration is not an indication that there is anything wrong with any of the components or the driving style, it would be more likely to make one think there 'could' be some clutch slip, which is the exact opposite of drag.

Clutch drag would have a very limited affect on 5th gear selection as to be practicably negligible. You can change into 5th without clutch operation at all without any damage occuring. We must remember that first contact is made with the syncro ring before the dog teeth make connection.

Pull apart 100 cars and you will see blue on the clutch plate and black on the friction plate on 99 of those cars.

Going by the reported satisfactory state of the other components, I would like to know why you only pressed the pedal fully on 1 2 3 & 4th gear and not on 5th. He is saying that you have not pressed the pedal fully but because he reports normal wear on the other gears, is in effect saying you only failed to push the pedal fully down on 5th gear.

I would even go as far as to say the report is either biased or he is not qualified enough to have made it.
