I have just been on the phone to Paragon Finance Company as my agreement (buying a sofa from DFS) with them should finish in 2 months. I have just been informed that I have charges on my account with them for returned DD's and as they sent me letters back in 2003!! They said they are sending out a statement and I have to pay these charges. What should I do?

Have received statement from Paragon telling me I owe 250.00 in charges. I have paid the last installment for my agreement but they are telling me it can't be settled until the charges are paid. Where do you suggest I go from here? Thanks in advance for the help!

I suggest you look at the prelim letter for reclaiming your charges, Im presuming the charges are for letters they sent as a result of bounced payments?

On my 1st national account they are termed 'letter charges'. No doubt they will tell me they reflect their costs, but since they were automated letters ill be disputing that.

The other thing you need to do is tell them the account is in dispute too, this will stall any action they may try to take with respect to defaulitng your account.

I would also do a trawl of the site and read the FAQs if you havent already to get a handle on other peopels threads on the same kinds of issues.

I second what GlenUK says. Send in the Pelim letter. If they pursue you for the charges advise them that the account is currently in dispute.

A good read back through the FAQ's will help clarify the process in your mind.

I guess my confusion comes in as the Prelim letter is if the charges have already been taken from you.

I see what you are both saying though and it is just a matter of tweaking the letter slightly. Will get on that tomorrow.

Appreciate the help. Thanks.

Just use the letter modified to suit your purpose, the charges are just as unlawful as any other credit card company.
