A friend of mine has just been told she has to repay £200 of overpaid child tax credit from 2 years ago. She has been told she was overpaid because she did not tell them for 5 months that her partner had left her. She is adamant that she telephoned them after he left. I am aware that calls are recorded, but she was told there was no record of this call and virtually called her a liar.

What would you suggest her next step should be?

I'm a single mum now, and got a letter from tax credits saying i was over paid in 2005 and 2006 (whilst with my then partner) and i must pay back my half which totals 1700 or they will take me to court :/

My GF has had this same thing in the past. They state that there was an overpayment of tax credits for a period after she had split up with her ex, and they say she didn't tell them. She just ignored it, as she couldn't repay the £400. That was back in 2005. Not heard a thing from them since, and she hasn't moved since then.
