Hi everyone I'm new here and I've read some of your posts and they've been so helpful in the past!

I was hoping someone could help me out now since I am in dire need! :|

Last September I opened a student account with LloydsTSB and tried to close my account with Barclays by filling in one form and letting Lloyds do the rest as they assured me they would do. I have now had a statement from Barclays saying that I am £94 overdrawn and that is because they did not close the account and every month that the account is still active they have charged me a £6.50 account fee for the "privilege" of using the account. The reason I tried to close it in the first place was because the account fee was supposed to insure my mobile phone and when it got damaged they refused to pay out. I am so angry I can hardly speak!! Barclays say that they have no record of me trying to close the account and that if I left it up to Lloyds they would not have closed it because Lloyds do not have the power to close my account. I also wrote a letter back then to ask them to close my account so they HAVE had notice to close it. They are now saying that I need to take it up with Lloyds and that to close the account I must pay the £94 outstanding! HELP!! I'm not paying this because the banks messed up anyone got any words of wisdom or failing that a plan to nuke the Barclays headquarters?! lol. Seriously though, any advice much appreciated.

I also wrote a letter back then to ask them to close my account so they HAVE had notice to close it.
Do you have a copy of that letter?

If so write, enclosing a copy, and inform them that it was their error they ignored your clear instruction and that you consider the a/c closed from xx/xx/xx and are not liable for any a/c fees from that date.

They must surely be the worst bank of the lot.

Actually, according to a recent survey the worst bank was Abbey though Barclays weren't too far behind

Unfortunately I don't as it was nearly 2 years ago and I was working somewhere else then and saved the letter to my work computer and considered the matter closed!!

I have just been in to the branch in the town near where I live and spoken to someone there who was very helpful and said straight away that I did not have to pay and that if I left it with him he would make sure it got cleaned up. He was going to register it through the complaints procedure so fingers crossed this is the end of it. Got a funny feeling they'll be back though to say I didn't try to close the account. Grr.
