In 2000 Halifax added £5,000 to my account in error, of which i had no knowledge or asked them for at the time,

at the same time i also transfered funds in to my account from some shares, unwittingly I also spent the £5,000 that halifax paid into my account. about 2 months later halifax called me and asked me to pay the money back, i told them i did not have it any more but they insisted that i would have to pay back the money and offered to allow me to pay it interest free for 5 years which i did, there was no loan agreement for this they just set up a standing order on my account of which i had to sign. was all this legal as i am begining to wonder after reading some of the theads on this forum can some please let me know.

Yes the bank is entitled to get its money back. Look on it as an interest free loan.

The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.
