Yeh I received one yesterday with the exact same as above, except for the address obviously :)

It is a Yorkshire based DEBT COLLECTION company. My advice, is to not phone them, and wait until you get another letter from them stating exactly what they want. Just out of curiousity, did they give you a reference number beginning with 9?

Just out of interest what number do they give to call? If it is a mobile or high rate charge call them you do not have to contact them as this contravenes the Office of Fair Trading debt collection guidelines

0800 027 0194 which is a freephone number

Send the clowns this by recorded delivery

Dear Sir/Madam

You have contacted me/us regarding the account with the above reference number, which you claim is owed by myself/ourselves.

I/we would point out that I/we have no knowledge of any such debt being owed to (insert company name).

I am/we are familiar with the Office of Fair Trading Debt Collection Guidance which states that it unfair to send demands for payment to an individual when it is uncertain that they are the debtor in question.

I/we would also point out that the OFT say under the Guidance that it is unfair to pursue third parties for payment when they are not liable. In not ceasing collection activity whilst investigating a reasonably queried or disputed debt you are using deceptive/and or unfair methods.

Furthermore ignoring and/or disregarding claims that debts have been settled or are disputed and continuing to make unjustified demands for payment amounts to physical/psychological harassment.

I/we would ask that no further contact be made concerning the above account unless you can provide evidence as to my/our liability for the debt in question.

I/we await your written confirmation that this matter is now closed. Otherwise I will have no option but to make a complaint to the trading standards department and consider informing the OFT of your actions.

I/we look forward to your reply.

Yours faithfully

I am now totally intrigued and wonder how the hell do they get away with it - intimidation or what.

Further letter received claiming that I owe £458.51 to Barclaycard and the collection of this 'debt' is now being collected by Red Debt Collection Services (I smell a [problem] here!)

Needless to say letter duly sent 22Jan08 - recorded delivery to a PO Box No 203 which is the same as Lowell's - interesting to note that PO Box 172 at Leeds LS11 9WS is used to return letter to sender of original letter(curious).

Apparrently 'this debt' was purchased by Lowell Porfolio on the 14Dec2007.

Further interest. I haven't had or used Barclaycard for over 30 years!!

Red Debt Collection letter also received about a week ago too. I've filed it under B for "To Be Binned" (I've kept it obviously for now but its laying with the previous communication assuming that I live at the address)

From what I can gather after searching through the threads is this:

  1. Lowells Financial, Lowells 1, Red Star, eventually Hamptons, are all one and the same. They have bought or been handed a load of Barclaycard debts and are just trying their utmost to intimidate, frighten and scare people with debts that either never existed, or if they did, are over 6 years old and therefore apparently statue barred (I think this means they are legally unenforceable)
  2. You can send them reply letters, but even if you send them recorded delivery, special delivery, or by carrier pidgeon, it is likely you will still continue to receive letters, threats and maybe a Court Summons
  3. If you do get a Court Summons then obviously do NOT ignore that, otherwise by default, they will simply win

I think it would be great if we could all club together and take some sort of combined civil action against this people. I'm not sure if that's possible, but it certainly seems to me, that countless numbers of people have been targeted by this company, and thats only the ones we know about, who have been lucky enough to have an internet connection, and some know how to research these letters. I bet there are thousands who right now are scared out of their wits by this Leeds based company, and I'm just wondering if anyone agrees, that Watchdog should be advised of this?

I apologise if I sound like I'm trying to incite some sort of crusade, but I for one am really fed up with this fear of coming home to more letters about an alledged debt that I don't even recognise the quoted Barclaycard number on. People get used very quickly to remembering the last four digits because these always appear on all receipts! I do not recognise the last 4 digits quoted on my letter :-x

A quick note to Watchdog may be a very useful way of letting other people know that this company is trying to intimidate them into paying through ignorance - ie lack of internet connections.

Perhaps the OFT and Trading Standards Office (Local and National) the Citizens Advice Bureau should be involved/notified as soon as possible?

I also get worried as to what an elderly/infirm person who has probably never had such a letter before would re-act - to avoid a visit from bailiff et al.... probably pay up - even sending a letter by post is another cost that they would needlessly incur.

I think from having read through many posts, elderly people have already been targeted too by this company. It really annoys me that this has happened to others, as well as me obviously, and I just wonder how these businesses would react if it was them being served with demands, summons, etc?

It's always the small person these b*ggers to go after, because they know they can get away with it

Whens watchdog on???? :D

You're right, my Mam was one of them. Cheque written out and ready to send until I found it. She's never had a credit card in her life, yet this bunch of idots reckoned she owed Barclaycard. She was scared out of her mind and losing sleep. To me there should be a law against it! And as another poster has said, you could put your life on the fact that if more than one person paid they sure as hell wouldn't return the cash to innocent targets!
