I joined this gym in March this year and have only been once or twice, i phoned up to cancel and was told the minimum time to cancel is 12 months.

If i cancelled the direct debit and refused to pay, what sort of come back have they got? am i in a offical contract with them, is there a get out clause for this sort of thing?

You need to check the contract you agreed to for any minimum term. If you cancel the direct debit it is likely you will be billed for the remainder of any contract and passed to debt collection.

Might be worth getting in touch with BBC watchdog as they covered a story on this topic recently (though on fitness first)
