Hi,

First of all, this website and forum are very interesting and I've learned a lot about banks in general. Thanks for all the useful information!

I have had, like a lot of you, problems of unlawfull bank charges taken from bank account by Halifax.

I have sent all the letters, but as I didn't get a positive answer, I've sent a claim form to the Financial Ombusdman, who has been very helpful too, I have to say.

Finally, through the FO, Halifax agreed to refund an amount of £950 !

This was beginning of June.

But I am still waiting for this refund.

In the meantime, I have had another problem with them:

I have an authorized overdraft limit of £900 on one of the two bank accounts I have with them. But then, due to various problems, my account went dramatically to an unauthorized overdraft of £2.200 ! As my wages were paid on the other bank account, I discovered one day that they have blocked also this account and would allow me to access it the day I have reimbursed the £2.200.

I understand, but they never sent me a letter explaining this and suddenly, I had to spend a month without paying my rent, my credit cards, and not even have the money to pay my travel card ! No friends, no family, I got the impression to drawn.

You have understood, of course, that the situation is going worth and worth because now I have rent arrears, and they continue to take £30 et £28 + interests every month, which lead me to an overdraft of £2.770 ! Next month, the interests will be £58 and I guess they are going to continue to take the £28 and £30 for unauthorized overdraft.

How can I stop this ?

I have sent them a letter, explaining that they agree to refund me £950, which will help me in paying back the debt. I have also said that I can pay £100/month, giving them the detail of my wages/expenditures, so that they can see I can't give more than that. They still have also £385 on the other account, that they can take to decrease the amount of the debt.

Their only answer was a very tough letter, saying that I'd better take a solicitor as, if I haven't repaid the amount by the 28 September, they take me to court. I can't face solicitor's fees (I am not entitled to legal financial help).

How can I stop them to take charges every month and how can I show them my good willingness ?

I am sorry for my English ! French is my mother tongue but I live and work here now since 2004.

I hope my explanations have been clear enough and I look forward to reading from you.

Thanks,

Hi Muriel

Welcome.

Sorry to hear about your problems with bank.

I think it is disgusting the way the bank has allowed you to go so much over your authorised overdraft in the first place.

Did they send you any letters warning you how much your overdraft was going up. Im sure that SSL or KTC will be able to give you some good advice as to what you can do or get in touch with a moderator for you.

Hope you get this sorted out as soon as possible.

Regards :)
