  1. Hello, I'm after a bit of advice, I've had my car 2 and a half months and the engine has ceased due to a lack of oil getting into the engine. It has had the engine removed by a BMW specialist and they have diagnosed that the oil pump has gone faulty as there is plenty of oil in the sump tank. I have tried to claim this through warranty as the car requires a new/refurb engine. The warranty company are finding every way under the sun not to pay out. I'm 19 so I don't really know where I stand so some advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  2. Hi guys, I'll be ringing up the company tomorrow and Wanted to know what they are like dealing with ? Thanks
  3. I’m looking to purchase a used vehicle past manufacture warranty in the near future; some dealers offer various types of aftermarket warranties. Reading about feedback purchasers experienced from these warranties, it seems they are not worth the paper it’s written on. It seems most claim handlers seem to wriggle out with the term “wear and tear”. My question is, are these regulated and referred to an independent adjudicator if things do go wrong if purchased one? Thanks
  4. Does anyone know if comet extended warranties are being honoured? my 82 year old dad has a tv he paid £1000 for plus £300 for a 5 year warranty. tv has developed a fault and the aftercare number is now just a statement of comets closure. I cant find any other info or number to contact. Hate to think my dads gonna be £1300 outta pocket.
  5. I purchased a replacement laptop battery via Ebay in August 2013, and chose this supplier as they advertised a 1yr warranty. I paid for the item via Paypal. 9 months down the line, the battery has failed. The supplier has refused to replace it FOC, and wants a part payment, about 75% of the full cost to send another battery. My view is that a warranty supposedly guarantee's the item purchased for a given period of time, and if it fails within that time, then it should be replaced at the suppliers cost, not the consumers. What are your views, please?
  6. BEWARE when buying anything from Currys/PC World if you think you are getting the manufacturer's warranty that you would get if you purchased your product elsewhere. I have discovered that Dixons (Currys/PC World) have a practice of "buying out" the manufacturer's warranty. What this means is that, if you need to make a claim under the manufacturer's warranty you thought you had purchased, the manufacturer may well tell you to get lost and contact Dixons instead. This certainly applies to Toshiba laptops and, I have been informed to several other manufacturers as well (e.g. Sumsung). Dixons may well argue that their KnowHow (definitely a misnomer) service is comparable. IT IS NOT. It is not a manufacturer's warranty and never will be - Dixons are not the manufacturer of Toshiba laptops - Toshiba are. If having a warranty is important to you think very hard before you buy and don't take Dixon's answers for granted - check with the manufacturer first. If in doubt - shop elsewhere. PC World are NOT the cheapest and they are certainly not the best!
  7. We have recently bought a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD Limited with 60,500 miles on the clock and full service history, some with the main dealer (1st 3 years). Although mechanically these vehicles are fairly sound as they have a Mercedes engine and a good transmission box, they tend to suffer from electrical/software failures which can be expensive. Warranty Wise seem to offer a good deal for the vehicle at £60 per month plus as long as have not claimed, you can cancel giving 30 days notice. My only concern is that your card is debited and no DD is raised. They advise that in case of insufficient funds the payment is declined and no charges are incurred. We have never ever bought an extended warranty previously as we have always bought Toyota cars which in comparison have been fairly low tech and easy to repair. One could always put the £60 into a savings account, but if several months down the line you require a repair costing £500 you have a problem. Do you have an opinion on these extended car warranties? Thanks.

  10. 27 June 2012 The OFT today accepted legally enforceable undertakings offered by the three largest UK electrical retailers to improve the way the extended warranties market works, following consultation with business and consumers. The OFT's market study of the £1 billion per year extended warranties market, published in February, highlighted a number of competition concerns that could mean customers are not getting the best value for money. To address these concerns, the OFT worked with Dixons, Comet and Argos to agree undertakings, which take into account points raised during the consultation, rather than referring the market to the Competition Commission (CC). Dixons, Comet and Argos have agreed to: Maintain and publicise an independently operated extended warranties price comparison website, to make shopping around easier. Provide more easily available information via in-store leaflets and retailer websites, including on the availability of alternative warranty providers. Conduct regular independent mystery shopping exercises to help ensure shoppers get accurate information from sales staff - and report the results to the OFT. Provide clear on-shelf information about the annual equivalent prices of 'Pay As You Go' (PAYG) warranties, to help shoppers understand the longer term costs when they enter these rolling monthly contracts. This currently affects Dixons as the only one of the three retailers to sell PAYG warranties. http://www.oft.gov.uk/news-and-updates/press/2012/53-12
