Britain's markets watchdog has fined Tesco 16.4 million pounds for failing to protect account holders at its bank from a "foreseeable" cyber attack two years ago. The Financial Conduct Authority said that in November 2016 cyber attackers exploited deficiencies in Tesco Bank's design of its debit card and in its financial crime controls. "Those deficiencies left Tesco Bank’s personal current account holders vulnerable to a largely avoidable incident that occurred over 48 hours and which netted the cyber attackers 2.26 million pounds," the FCA said in a statement on Monday. According to a security expert, tens of millions of usernames and passwords have been hacked, concerning email accounts with Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo, with the details traded online. The report says that data from somewhere in the region of 97 million accounts have been swiped. It looks like personal information from around 40 million Yahoo Mail accounts, 33 million Hotmail accounts and 24 million Gmail accounts have been accessed. Telephone and broadband provider Talktalk saw profits more than halve following a hack attack on its systems last October. Profits fell to £14m compared with £32m a year earlier. That fall is partly due to the costs of last year's serious cyber attack, which cost the company £42m. Ebay has asked users to change their passwords following a cyberattack that compromised one of its databases. The auction site said that the database contained encrypted passwords and other non-financial information. The US firm added that it had no evidence of there being unauthorised activity on its members' accounts. " Eight men have been arrested after a gang stole more than £1m from a high street bank by taking control of one of its computer systems. The money was stolen from a Barclays branch in Swiss Cottage, London, earlier this year, using a device known as a "keyboard, video and mouse" (KVM) switch. The hardware, which can be purchased online for as little as £10 and is the size of a small laptop computer, allowed the gang to transmit the contents of the computer's desktop and take control of the machine remotely.
