  1. Dear RMT/Southwestern Railway, I am a wheelchair user and do not drive, so am entirely dependent on public transport. I had intended to travel to my sister’s home on Saturday 21st December. When the strike on that date was announced we explored various alternatives as I cannot risk travelling on a train that would have already been crowded but is now likely to involve additional changes and be even more crowded, if it runs at all. One of the services I need to use only has one wheelchair space, so if it’s already occupied I could have ended up waiting hours for another train. I cannot use National Express coaches as my wheelchair is too heavy to be carried as luggage and is not suitable for use on their accessible buses. With no other option, I eventually and very reluctantly agreed to allow my brother-in-law to undertake a 4 hour return journey on Christmas Eve to fetch me. I detest having to disrupt his Christmas Eve plans and also will not be able to enjoy my stay nearly as much as I’ll have no time to get over the pain travelling inevitably causes me before the big day, but it’s better than not being able to get there at all. Yesterday, RMT announced a further strike on 27th December, the day I need to travel home and the day that both my sister and her husband have to go back to work. Again, the trains would be crowded anyway so that any that do run are going to be much worse, and again, there’s the issue with limited wheelchair spaces being already occupied. I have travelled during a previous strike and did eventually get to my destination, however the whole experience was horrendous. At one station I actually held up the train’s departure for nearly 15 minutes whilst station and train staff attempted to clear enough passengers and luggage out of the way for me to reach the wheelchair space, and whilst I cannot fault any of the staff or most of the passengers who had to move, it would have been a humiliating experience even without the few who complained. There have been enough horror stories about disabled users and public transport in the news this year for most people to be aware that any journey on public transport is a challenge. Add in strikes at an already busy time of the year and the challenge becomes insurmountable. The fact that the strike seems to be over something that wasn’t ever going to happen anyway is just the icing in the cake. Southwestern say they’ve never intended to run guard-free trains, RMT say they will, so who is telling the truth and why do they have to wreck my Christmas to sort it out? Perhaps someone could spell out for me what is so terrible that it's worth leaving me, or anyone else, to spend Christmas on their own? I'll definitely be thinking of you both as I tuck into my turkey burger and pudding for one.
  2. I had a time to pay hearing today for a credit card debt. Cabot was represented by nolans. I offered 10 per month on my court documents. Nolans rejected this and today we had a hearing. I'm a bit confused by it all. I said I was financially struggling. I was told an open decree was granted and I had to pay. So what does that now mean? I asked what happens next and was told that was up to nolans. Help!

  4. So here's a brief rundown of my situation. I have a large loan with RBS, and was paying it off fine until about 8 months ago when I got into serious financial difficulty. RBS helped for a short time reducing my payments to just £1 per month for three months but of course still adding interest at £200 per month...which by the way they said they would not do but that's another story. My circumstances didn't improve and I have spent the last 5 months trying to reach an agreement with them. Eventually they agreed to accept a token payment of £1 per month and stop all interest and charges. However they also said in order to do that they would make my accounts "non-operational" and that I should return my debit card and see other banking facilities elsewhere. Fair enough but of course I need at least a basic account for money to go in and out of. I looked at Nationwide as their basic account seems to do everything I need however it seems that it is only available to bankrupts and/or people who do not already have another UK account. This leaves me with a problem because "technically" I no longer have a functioning UK account but it still "exists" if you see what I mean? I can't proceed with the online application if I answer yes to the question "do you have another UK account". If I answer no..would I be lying? I can't apply for the normal account because my credit rating is as low as it can possibly be right now so not only would it be an extra search on my file but I would be refused. Maybe I should just answer "no" to that question about other accounts. Just wanted to see what others experiences are.
  5. Later this month, the long awaited Mersey Gateway will open to the public. The Mersey Gateway and the Silver Jubilee Bridges will both be tolled. The tolling system is called Merseyflow and will be operated by Emovis who operate the Dartford Crossing. In the same way as the Dartford Crossing, if payment of the toll is not paid by midnight the day after the crossing a Penalty Charge Notice will be issued for the amount of £40 (plus the unpaid toll fee). This sum will be reduced to a discounted rate of £20 if paid within the first 14 days of being issued. If the Penalty Charge Notice has still not been paid after this 28-day period, then the fee that must be paid is increased to £60 if it is paid within the following 14 days. If the Penalty remains unpaid beyond this 42-day period, then the penalty will be registered as a civil debt and if unpaid after another 36 days, recovery action will begin. In the same way as the public can open a Dart Charge account, motorists using the Mersey Gateway will need to open a Merseyflow account. Their website is below https://www.merseyflow.co.uk
  6. MY 16-19 account had been opened in december 2016 and yesterday, the 23rd of February, I received a letter that my account was being closed, and that Barclays were unable to continue being my bankers. It offers no other explanation. I realized yesterday that my card was missing when I attempted to call them and tried to find my account number and sort code. I decided to go into a branch and was told that my account did not exist. I'm concerned whether there is any way I can reverse this decision and whether I will be able to open an account with another bank or building society such as Nationwide or Santander? There is no issue of money being stuck, more the inconvenience of having my account closed down and having no idea about it

  12. It should be noted that to date (3rd Sept 2015) I have not received any personal response from Kwick Fit since I sent this to them on 28/8/15 via their online coolants form. Dear Sir, Complaint regarding Kwick Fit at Sunderland Road, Gateshead During a recent MOT of my car at this garage on 2/6/2015 it failed due to supposedly faulty wiper blades. These were replaced in order to pass the MOT. I was curious of this failure as I had run my finger along the blades beforehand and did not feel any damage on the rubber nor was there any obstruction on the windscreen. I asked for them back as I wanted to see the reason for failure. When these were returned to me the blade had been physically torn from the wiper. It was not in this condition when I took it in to the garage. I however reluctantly took this as damage caused through removal of the blade from the wiper arm. Within two days of the MOT I noticed a crack which travelled from the bottom of the windscreen up to the wiper blade and followed the length of the blade. Although there was no chip, I have since been told by another independent garage that the crack is a direct cause of the wiper arm (without wiper blade fitted) being released under tension and hitting the windscreen with force. A little over a month later 25/7/2015 I returned my car to the same Kwick Fit garage to have a puncture repaired. During the tyre repair I was informed by the manager that the brakes were nearly worn out and the rear break calliper was seizing. The manager also told me the car needed a new brake disk due to ‘heat damage’ although I could not see any signs of bluing or warping due to heat when I inspected it. I opted to have the work done at a later date when the pads were actually wearing out The next day there was a constant grinding noise from the offending wheel. I contacted Kwick Fit to instruct them to replace the Pads and Calliper. At which the manager refused my instruction insisting that both rear brake disks were replaced as well at an additional £127.00 My experience from the MOT made me take the car to a non Kwick Fit garage for second opinion. The other garage engineer informed me that the pads had indeed worn out and were now metal against metal; in addition the garage told me he had to ‘chisel’ the pads out as the calliper was seized solid and had been so for some time. He didn’t mention heat damage, nor could I see any bluing on brake disk indicative of heat damage as Kwick Fit had stated. The reasons for my complaint are: Kwick Fit had not identified the worn brakes in the MOT, or a binding brake calliper during the MOT. Although the failure occurred a month following the MOT, the condition of the breaks should have been easily observed by a competent mechanic and, in my opinion the vehicle left the MOT in a dangerous condition. I am very suspicious of the fact that the pads failed the next day. This is very co-incidental. I am also aggrieved that a crack on the windscreen appeared directly after work carried out by Kwick Fit and is suggestive of heavy handedness - resulting in a costly replacement of the screen and potential insurance claim against Kwick Fit. Before I discredit Kwick Kit I will give you the opportunity to rectify the faults which have appeared on my car whilst in the care of your employees especially to the windscreen which is non repairable. I can of course have an independent engineer confirm the cause of damage to the windscreen if required. Regards (Name withheld from forum)

  18. Many people moving home are putting themselves at risk of ID fraud by failing to tell their financial service providers their new address. A Royal Mail survey found a third of people moving forgot to give their new details to at least one provider. Half of those asked said they had received letters through the door thought to contain sensitive financial information for previous residents. The majority said that they were concerned about identity theft. The crime is used by fraudsters who gather personal information in order to raid accounts or raise credit in somebody else's name. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-28142647 Who to notify checklist If you're moving house, it's important to inform the relevant people of your departure. 21. Hi I cannot open a bank account anywhere, I have tried every high street bank I can think of. Barclays briefly opened a basic account for me which was closed some 48 hours later with no reasoning or explanation. I have checked my credit file and whilst it is appalling in it's nature, lots of defaults and a couple of CCJs I was advised by Yorkshire Bank that I may have a fraud marker against my name - I cannot see this. There are no CIFAS warnings and I have registered with all 3 credit reference agencies. I have tried to open accounts with; Natwest Lloyds Coop Santander Barclays Yorkshire Bank Halifax Nationwide They've all said no. I just don't know what to do, I cannot cope without a bank account and I have debt problems yes, but what risk am I to a bank with an account that cannot go overdrawn? Hoping somebody can help. Regards

  23. Hello I would be extremely grateful for any help or advice for this problem below. The person in question cannot open a basic bank account. He has tried every bank and building society on the high st, in a possible radius and online. He has even tried the Barclays Cash Card and the Co-op Cash Minder. http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/basic-bank-accounts Both Barclays and Co-op have said that as long as you have the required proof of address and ID, you'll be able to get a basic bank account. Went there, tried, no look at all. Still he cannot get a basic bank account to have his wages paid into. I would like to ask members is there anything else that can be done? Thanks for your time. Dan
  24. A new system that will allow insurers to access DVLA data on drivers' convictions and penalty points will be tested from February. The insurance industry says the move will cut the amount of fraud seen under the current system of driver declaration. Up to 23% of motorists failed to accurately disclose their record to insurers, it has claimed. Drivers will want to ensure that the new system will lead to lower premiums. Costs The scheme is known as MyLicence and has been developed by the Association of British Insurers (ABI), the Motor Insurers' Bureau, the DVLA and the Department for Transport. Insurers will be able to access information to cross-check any points and convictions at the application stage and price the premium accordingly. The ABI said that 23% of motorists made incorrect disclosures. This could make insurance invalid, it said. It argued that the fraud, and complex claims that were subsequently generated, increased premiums for honest drivers, so the new scheme should cut costs. About 7% of inaccurate declarations came from drivers who declared spent convictions or points, so they could also see premiums fall under the new regime. The MyLicence project will be tested from February and then begin in full during the second quarter of 2014. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-25016515
  25. OK, so it's 3am and you're up for whatever reason - would you have your downstairs windows/backdoor open for relief from the hot weather? I had my front living room window open last night, and a regular guy in work clothes tried to pull the window wider from the outside - I assume with the intention of a theft of opportunity. What do you think?
