  1. Rent-to-own company Brighthouse will close 30 of its stores and cut 350 jobs, shrinking its size by around a tenth. The closures around Britain are due to take place over the next two months, with Brighthouse's 3,000 workforce already informed. https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/news/article-6673493/Rent-firm-Brighthouse-close-30-stores-cut-350-jobs.html?mrn_rm=rta
  2. Santander is to close 140 branches, putting 1,270 jobs at risk, the Spanish-owned bank said. The lender said the closures are in response to how customers are choosing to carry out their banking. Santander has consulted unions on the proposed changes and will seek to find alternative roles for the 1,270 staff members affected, wherever possible. The bank expects to be able to redeploy around a third of that number. Susan Allen, Santander’s head of retail and business banking, said: “The way our customers are choosing to bank with us has changed dramatically in recent years, with more and more customers using online and mobile channels. “As a result, we have had to take some very difficult decisions over our less-visited branches, and those where we have other branches in close proximity. 4. I was hoping that if I ended up on JSA, I could do their token jobsearch on the abysmal Jobmatch site and then do my own jobsearch later on at home at proper sites like Indeed or whatever, but it seems they're not letting you do that without a sanction. Why is that? Don't they trust us to look for ourselves? They honestly don't want people claiming benefits in the first place so it would be obvious that they would help us in our OWN jobsearch rather than theirs. In fact, I heard a rumour that those upright machines with the touchscreens that print out jobs for you have disappeared entirely from ALL JCPs - is that true?
  5. Change in government’s energy policy blamed for job losses just as solar power eclipses coal in electricity generation I just do not get it,why? Article. http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/jun/10/uk-solar-power-industry-job-losses-government-subsidy-cuts-energy-policy
  6. If you're a single person with no children you need to work at least 30 hours a week to qualify, but does it have to be from one job only? I'm working part time. If I get a second part time job, would I be entitled to WTC? Sorry for the silly question but I've checked on gov.UK and it's not very clear. Thanks.
  7. Npower, one of Britain's biggest energy suppliers, will outline plans this week to axe thousands of jobs ‎as its German owner attempts to revive the company's weak financial performance. Sky News has learned that Npower will tell staff in the coming days that approximately 2,500 roles at the company and its‎ partners are to be axed. Sources said the proposals were still being finalised, with some of Npower's directly employed workforce of 7,500 at risk and the remainder of the cuts taking place at internal suppliers elsewhere in the RWE group and at outsourcing partners. Including indirect employment, Npower's operations support about 11,500 jobs in the UK - meaning that its workforce is braced for a reduction of over 20%. The grim news will be delivered just days before competition regulators announce a series of measures aimed at making the UK's energy market more transparent. Npower, which is part of the German utility RWE, and rivals such as British Gas and SSE have announced a round of price cuts ‎in recent months, but have been criticised by ministers and consumer groups for failing to go further. The rapid decline in oil prices during the last year has prompted calls for much bigger cuts. Npower said last month that it would reduce gas prices for residential customers by just over 5% on 28 March, equating to a £32 annual bill cut for households using a standard domestic ‎tariff. Npower's plans to cut so many jobs will ignite concerns about its ability to improve a customer service record which is already judged to be among the worst in a tarnished industry. Insiders pointed, however, to the beginnings of a turnaround in its performance, with the number of complaints halving in 2015. Last year, RWE ousted Paul Massara, Npower's former boss, and installed‎ Paul Coffey, the British company's chief operating officer, in his place. The management changes followed a decline in Npower's customer base following a string of billing problems. In December, the company was ordered to pay a £26m settlement by the energy regulator, Ofgem, for "failing to treat customers fairly" - the second such fine it has had imposed on it. Npower now has roughly five million customers, making it the smallest of the "Big Six" suppliers. The company lost £48m in the nine months to the end of October, largely as a consequence of the billing system problems. The job cuts will be the latest piece of bad news affecting RWE in the UK, following last month's accident at the power station it owns in Didcot, Oxfordshire, which is thought to have left several people dead. The redundancies at Npower are unrelated to the Didcot tragedy. It is not only in Britain that RWE, Npower's German owner, has been experiencing challenges. It announced last month that it was scrapping its full-year dividend, blaming sliding earnings from its electricity generation business and the changing political sentiment towards nuclear power in its home market. The dividend move will save around €600m (£464m). RWE will announce annual results on Tuesday, and is expected to set out further details of its plans for Npower alongside them. Two days later, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will unveil its final proposals arising from a two-year inquiry into the energy sector. Npower declined to comment on Sunday. SKY
  8. Northern Powerhouse department to close office in Sheffield and move 247 jobs to London Read more: http://metro.co.uk/2016/01/29/northern-powerhouse-department-to-close-office-in-sheffield-and-move-247-jobs-to-london-5651943/#ixzz3yiz1scce
  9. When i signed on the 1st June, i noticed a small (half A4 size) notice about a Jobs Fair the day after (2nd June), anyway, i signed on as normal and was just about to leave when i asked about the Jobs Fair, he said it was mandatory, and i left... ...the thing is, he made no attempt during the signing to mention about it or give me a "direction" letter, and because of this i completely forgot about the Jobs Fair the day after. Can i still be santioned for not going, i thought they had to give you written notice of it detailing the penalties for not attending, all i had was just an unofficial verbal notice (well basically him saying "Yeah it's tomorrow at 10.30", he had to ask someone else if it was mandatory)...does this make it a verbal contract, don't think he put anything about it on the system. I would've attended if i was given proper notice, but because i'm scatterbrained, i genuinely forgot about it.
  10. How can I find out if I am deliberately being turned down for jobs where I have previously work due to someone in authority taking a dislike to me.
  11. Carcraft closure: 500 jobs to go at second-hand car dealer The company has 10 showrooms around the UK The second-hand car company Carcraft is to close, with the loss of about 500 jobs. The dealership, based in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, has 10 showrooms around the country. Carcraft is the UK's seventh-largest second-hand car chain, selling more than 12,000 used vehicles a year, administrators said. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-32538820
  12. I was offered a house which was in dilapidated condition from the council. At the time an acquaintance tried to sort me out with a shared private let, rather than move into this house of horrors, but this fell through. The council deemed me intentionally homeless because of this. I was refused access to my housing officer and refused my right to make a complaint about the property, at the time when i had to make a decision. I had a couple of days time frame to make this decision. My appeal failed and i was to be cast onto the streets like a leper, but fortunately luck was on my side. An near impossible feat for an unemployed person in Edinburgh, i found a private let through an x-landlord i was with while i was at university here. So my question is, how long does this unusual punishment last if you are struck of by a council? Is that it for you? are you just left to die on the streets or maybe luckily find a prison cell? https://www.flickr.com/photos/124422960@N08/with/14339100655/ some pictures from a temporary accommodation dwelling courtesy of Edinburgh council and associated partners. 13. Jaguar Land Rover says it will create 1,300 new jobs to build Jaguar's first sports utility vehicle (SUV) at its Solihull plant in the West Midlands. The firm has already invested £1.5bn in the Solihull plant to enable it to increase production, and it said its workforce there had almost doubled over the past three years to 9,450. Jaguar Land Rover currently employs 30,500 people in the UK. The car, called the Jaguar F-PACE, will be based on its C-X17 concept car. That was first launched at the Frankfurt motor show in 2013. The new model is due to go on sale in 2016. Jaguar Land Rover's UK executive director, Mike Wright, told the BBC the new vehicle would not be a "gas guzzler". "We spend about £3.5bn on our product investment each year and one thing that we really focus on is making sure that our future cars are both economic in terms of fuel economy, in terms of CO2. "This car's going to be built at one of the world's biggest aluminium body shops at Solihull that we've invested a huge amount of money in over the last couple of years. So gas guzzling? No". 'Thriving' The luxury car firm, owned by India's Tata Motors, said it had chosen the UK as the new model's manufacturing base because it wanted its cars to be "crafted with that special British flair". Jaguar Land Rover chief executive Dr Ralf Speth said the announcement demonstrated its "commitment to the UK and the advancement of a high-tech, high-skilled, manufacturing-led economy". Business Secretary Vince Cable hailed the decision as a "ringing endorsement" of the UK's car industry. Mr Cable said Jaguar Land Rover's decision showed the UK's car manufacturing sector was in good health. "The UK's automotive industry is thriving with a new car rolling off the production line every 20 seconds, and increasing levels of investment that's helping to secure local jobs," he said. Growth The announcement came as Jaguar Land Rover said it had sold 462,678 vehicles globally last year - a rise of 9% year-on-year - and the fifth consecutive year that sales have grown. China saw the strongest growth, with sales up 28%, while in the UK sales rose 7%. Economic growth in China has slowed in recent years, and a clampdown on government spending on luxuries is eating into many companies' sales growth in the country. However, Mr Wright told the BBC said there was little sign of slowing demand in China for its products. "In the medium to long-term we see huge demand. The retail demand is still there in China," he said. So why was it doing so poorly under UK managership, has the UK lost it's way or is Europe stifling it?

  17. Good Afternoon I hope you are all as well as can be. I wanted some guidance on the following if anyone can help? I'm currently working full-time from 9:00-5:30 Monday to Friday and am looking to do some extra work as a barman in the evening. My salary is £23,500per annum and I take home around £1,500 per month after tax of which my code is 944L. The part-time job i'm going into pay's £7,00 per hour and I will be doing around 12-15hours a week. Does anyone know how this will affect me tax wise?
  18. I want tips for getting jobs, rather than just not being sanctioned. Th WP Advisors are not much help, more of a hindrance. Mistake: this should have gone in the Employment Forum. Bad night's sleep problems.
  19. This morning i went to my first mandatory Jobs and Careers Fair in town, it's a FREE event, yet the staff at the JC treated us like common criminals with their threats of sanctions if we didn't go to it, but that's not all, once we filled in a form (local council housing?), we had to have our name checked off from the JC register (or sanction list as i called it!), we were then given a piece of paper where we had to write down 5 employers that we've met today and what we did, this was also written with the threat of sanctions if we didn't comply! Don't forget, this is a FREE event and everyone is welcome...unless your unemployed ****! 75 stands of which 10 were any use to me, most were agencies that i've already signed up with, loads of colleges trying to entice 18-25 year olds to join, and only 4 proper companies looking to recruit people! Didn't like the attitude of the DWP staff walking around asking random people if they've found anything useful yet! Oh well, at least i got lots of free pens from it!
  20. Hi Everyone, I am on Income Support and receiving Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit for my 19 years old son, he will be 20 years old in January, I was told by both CB and CT that my son can receive those as he is under 20 years old and is a full time student, he has just enrol for his new course and I am wondering what hours does the Housing Benefit class as full time studying! I have the papers for proof for his studying from his College, they have put on the start date and end date for the course! which is Sept 2013 until 26/6/2014 start from 9-00am to 5-00pm! I have already rang my local authority and will take the hard copy to them as they suggested because the would not accept a photo copy that is no problem, but I am now very worried after seeing a thread on here very recently about someone studying for their course and could not take exam all day as they were classed as not available for work, I do not want my son being hassle by either the DWP or Ingeus he is studying hard at the moment and wants to go straight to work once he finishes his study, I am also helping him to look for Apprenticeship job whilst he is studying! Can someone please tell me how many hours does the Housing Benefit class as full time studying??? Thanks in advance! helen
  21. Hi, this is a complicated one but I will try to keep it brief! I had been working for company X for 3 years when company Y took over management of the site. I was told at the time that I had to TUPE over to company Y or I would effectively be making myself redundant as there was no longer a job for me with company X. I was also told that it was company Y’s policy to employ people at my level (admin support) through a contracting company (company Z). Now, this all went ok until recently. During the 2 years I have been working for the contracting company the original company I worked for took on a part time admin position. Now, company Y are taking over all staff from company X on a direct contract of employment (including the part time admin position) rather than through the contracting company I work for. Now, my question is: Can company Y employ the admin position directly even though the TUPE arrangements and job are exactly the same as mine rather than through the contracting company like people of my position are. I have asked the question of company Y as how this can be. They have responded that the work brought over by the other admin position is “different”. However, I was recently asked in a team meeting what work of mine I could hand over to this position. I have been asking for a direct contract of employment for 2 years, and now someone who does exactly the same tasks as me is being taken on directly, it doesn’t seem fair or right. Any help anyone can give will be gratefully received!
  22. I'm hoping someone can help me with a query on my jsa being sanctioned for failing to apply for jobs i'm not qualified for!! Basically when i signed on i was told my job search activity log did not include any applications for jobs in the last fortnight....i explained to my advisor that all applicable vacancies i had seen had statutary requirements of basic qualifications or certificates which i did not possess...i was then told i should have applied for them regardless and because i did not my claim was being sent to a decision maker!!! I was given form ES48 which states "Until this decision is reached jobseekers allowance cannot be paid Firstly am i right that by being referred to a decision maker my payment will automatically be stopped and will probably rely on an appeal to qualify for future payments?? Also how is it ethical to require me to apply for jobs i'm not qualified for?? Any advice on how to fight this decision would be greatly appreciated
  23. This honestly doesn't surprise me. All I can say to those of you who use the website be careful.... http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2012/dec/11/fake-adverts-government-jobs-website
  24. Hi Has anyone on the WP with Ingeus and been mandated to use their new website 'Ingeuswork.com' Wondered if anyone had any feedback on it and their results? I have found very little helpful to me, the distances are cost prohibitive travel wise or the jobs unmatched to my criteria. I was sent a Teacher role and a Lawyers Assistant!
  25. These are from Head Office. Administrators say there are no plans for further redundancies at this time, and stores will continue to trade. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20274129
