Hi Elderly relative slipped on food produce on supermarket floor. Very bad fall. Immediately other customers came to help and they called over a store assistant to assist. This assistant then put up one of the yellow "danger slippery surface" signs. Relative had the presence of mind to use telephone to photograph what slipped on and the injury. After a while relative managed to get up/ drive home and then go to the doctor. Its a rural quite old-fashioned GP and they told relative to come back if injury gets worse (ie they were very busy and kind of couldn't deal with this type of complaint) 1 month later the bruising has subsided but the injury is still bad; causing problems. A possible fracture? Needs an x-ray to verify. In the meantime relative had been expecting a call from the local branch to check injury ok - but never received any call. So relative instead wrote to the head office of supermarket and complained. The head office replied quite swiftly advising relative to return to the local branch for compensation: which turned out to be a bunch of flowers and a cheque for a nominal (tiny) value. Given relative is elderly and vulnerable I am of the opinion that the flowers/tiny cheque value is a 'fob off'. Lots of elderly would be very happy with such "gifts". But relative is still in pain and may even have a fracture (can update on this after hospital) so I am wondering if we should write and thank them for the flowers and the cheque - but we are considering making an injury claim against them. Is this how it works? See how they reply to such a letter from relative? Or just go straight to a lawyer to handle this issue?

Well good old Gordon Brown or was it Laudy Fraudy in the New Labour govt who tried to stop the DWP from issuing these because the DWP always gets things right as they stated in a Parliamentary question response. Uproar followed by a U-Turn occurs rather quickly iirc! Well after the DWP quietly stopped collecting statistics on their food bank referrals.... just like all that other data they claimed they didn't collect but was released after massive fight even ignoring the Information Commissioners Rulings. They've actually gone and done it! Stopped all referrals to food banks... and who did they announce this too? An assessor came to price up damage to our house which was covered by insurance, they listed the work that would need carrying out and informed us that during the works food allowance would be £10 oer day per person. The work was pretty extensive and left us without electricity through a large part of the house including lighting. The ceilings of the effected areas had asbestos in so we had to stay in alternative accomodation for a few days while this was removed. We then returned during the very cold snap and the house was extremely cold due to the heat going straight into the loft space. They reinstated the ceiling upstairs within 4-5 days though we were very cold during that time. With the level of work involved and the lack of electricity we felt we should have been accomodated elsewhere but put up with it since they had said it would only take 2-3 weeks. The work ended up taking 2 days short of 9 weeks. When I submitted the claim for food (61 days at £10 per day per person) I was asked how many children did that include. When the assessor originally quoted this to us he didn't mention that it would only be £5 per child and £10 per adult. Though my children are 11 and 14 they are strapping lads who in fact eat more than I do. I feel like we've been diddled here, firstly since we didn't insist on the alternative accomodation as it felt like the upheaval for only 2-3 weeks didn't seem worth it and then to be told that we will be getting back substantially less in food allowance. We live on the Cornish coast and you can't eat anywhere for under £15 a main meal and often more. The pub even had on the kids menu that it was for children under 10. Has anyone else had similar issues? -
Hi all, A 78 year old good friend was due to fly back home to Austin, Texas, via Houston on Wednesday. Singapore airlines would take him to Houston and then United were due to take him to Austin. His flight were cancelled so I contacted Singapore and they agreed to pay for BA flights tomorrow from Manchester to London and then on to Austin, which is great. However, they have refused to reimburse him for his accommodation and food costs. Is this correct, please? -
Hello, At the beginning of the month I was happily munching my way through a tasty packet of crisps when I bit into a small stone. I emailed the manufacturer the same day with photographs. No reply; not even an acknowledgement. I forwarded the email to the shop and, after chasing them, they asked for more details, which I provided. They passed them on to the manufacturer, who asked me to send them the stone. I've refused but have contacted the food safety team at the council in which the crisp manufacturer is based. I made an appointment with the dentist the day after it happened and have chipped a tooth and cracked another one. The dentist offered to file the chipped tooth and said that I may have some problems with the cracked one in the future. I went back last week as my teeth became sensitive and the dentist covered the chip with sealant and x-rayed the cracked tooth. The dentist has been great and not charged me for the two appointments or treatment. I've taken time off work (and have worked through lunches to make up the time). I don't want compensation, just for any related dental treatment to be reimbursed. The shop has sent me a £5 goodwill voucher. (It's quite insulting and I really wish they hadn't bothered. I'm very tempted to hand it in at the shop and ask the manager to sign for it!) Is there any way I can cover myself for any future dental work related to the injury? Many thanks, Mrs M.

Does anyone buy there petfood from a wholesaler or manufacturer? I have two cats who usually have dry food in the morning and soft in the evening. My boy cat has recently had a reaccurring FUTI so i have been advised to only give him soft food, which is a lot more expensive! I'm hoping to be able to find a cheap website or contact where i can cut out the middle man and hopefully the price.

Hi - i wonder if anyone can help. My parents are on holiday in Majorca on a Thomson holiday (I am back in UK) My mum has become very ill, vomiting 6 times overnight and bedridden and unable to get up. My stepdad let me know. So far, I have called the helpline and they got in contact and a doctor came - charged €180 and said he suspected gastroenteritis. She has some medication and some isotonic water. It is only 2 days into a 1 week holiday. Has anyone been in a similar situation, especially with a view to: 1. making sure she gets the right treatment 2. possibly getting her home 3. once, the important bits above are done, what can be done with regards to exploring whether the hotel/Thomsons is/are liable So far, my stepdad has kept a log of everything, has food receipts etc. Thomsons have filed the incident, asked them a load of questions: i.e. does she drink a lot of alcohol (answer = she barley drinks and has maximum of 2 unit with food occasionally), did she swim in the pool (yes), did she swim in the sea (yes). I assume these questions are for evidence later should we claim. Also, the person in the next door suite said 'Oh no, not another outbreak, we have had similar problems here before and people were dropping like flies' but I guess that is just hearsay Any advice would be much appreciated thanks -
A mother, furious at waiting more than 48 hours for her online shopping, stormed into her local Asda and took it from the shelves herself. Danni Leadbeater, 30, ordered a £50 shop from the supermarket for herself and her two young children last week. However, it failed to turn up twice after her order was cancelled by the store and then re-booked. And after waiting more than two days, and being charged twice for it, she took matters into her own hands. She went into the Eastlands superstore, opposite Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium and began taking the items from the shelves and piling them into a trolley. After a stand-off with staff and security, and an intervention from the company’s HQ, she was eventually allowed to leave without paying for it again. I've had no scope for growing my own food beyond what will flourish on a window sill for a long time. I got onto the council waiting list for a Plot with the foreboding warning it might take as long as 15 years to get to the top! As it turned out it was less than 2 in the end. Annual charges are under 30 quid - I can spend that much in one visit to the Co-op without much trouble! I have forked out (pardon the pun) for some tools and a second (could be 3rd/4th/5th!) hand shed and splashed out on seeds and magazines (if they have free seeds!) I've also been very lucky with family and other plot holders giving me seedlings and tools to get me started. I have been digging away for a few hours at the weekend since taking it on in January - and I have an enviable supply of organic fruit and veg at my disposal. Not to mention feeling smug at making food appear out of the ground instead of out of a plastic packet, I am also smug when cooking because it tastes better too. Another bonus - it's excellent exercise and a great way to make new friends who want to pass on all their tips - If you are still paying for a gym membership you don't make good use of = STOP, get a PLOT! Apply via your local authority website, get on the waiting list and be sure to remind them you are very keen every so often, or see if you can share with someone and get there sooner. Do it today! I'm watching an old episode of Superscrimpers, and a family are having an 'intervention' and challenge due to their excessive food bill. A couple with 3 children, they spend £382 a week in total on food - £240 a week in supermarkets, and the rest on takeouts and a meal out every week. I was stunned as I had been thinking our food bill was big - I have to eat very cleanly (of a limited diet), so we cook from scratch every day, and I have to eat plenty of quality meat, - as a couple our spend is between £80 to £100 a week (no takeouts, been a long while since we had a meal out), which I thought was a lot. What do you think? What's your family size and what do you spend on food weekly?

Hi! My first time at this! Is anyone else like me and wonder why Tescos does so well? I go in there and all the drinks seem to be sugary rubbish. Most of the meat seems to be very processed , poor ham and beef etc. If you are trying to find healthy foods: salmon salads, V8 type drinks, unprocessed meat or let alone fresh fish. I suspect people have got so used to frozen fish or fish treated with bleaches etc they no longer know what the real thing is. Admittedly Waitrose and M&S are expensive alternatives and not perfect but surely people value what they are putting in their bodies more than what Tescos serves up? Also I don't buy it that people can't afford better food as the very same people who buy from Tescos can be seen lining up in KFC/McDonalds etc (all more expensive than the "better" supermarkets). Come on people, vote with your feet! No, I don't work for Waitrose..just interested in peoples thoughts! Mike

Hi Guys, Recently I kinda burnt some food on the stove! OK... ok, I forgot it was there until the smoke alarm went off. Anyway, the kitchen STANK for ages after that. UNTIL. A few days ago a friend said, get some lemons, chop them up finely, get a MASSIVE pot, fill it with water, plonk the lemon in and give the kitchen a steam bath. So I did, and guess what.. The smell INSTANTLY disappeared! Just a word of warning, I was sure to remove things like metal ornaments and books etc... incase the acid in the lemon vapour corroded it. Also remove books as acid can face the covers and pages Hope this helps! Cheers, A -

Oh could have an under ripened banana and some long life orange juice, no protein or healthy food provided! Not even wholemeal bread at times! Main meal at lunch time, very small, less than a hundred grams of protein, yes i can estimate that Evening meal was soup and a sandwich and a snack sized pack of biscuits for your supper. One evening the sandwich was chicken....3 tiny pieces of it! I know there is very little money put for hospital food but this is not acceptable, no wonder old people with no support network lose weight in hospital!

The second wettest summer on record has blighted UK harvests and will lead to food price rises, farmers and retailers have warned. Wheat yields in England are down by almost 15% on the five-year average, the National Farmers' Union (NFU) reported, with some areas in the west of England suffering worst from the summer rain. The world price of grain has already been rising in recent months following a heatwave in Russia and the worst drought in 50 years in the US, which destroyed 45% of corn and 35% of the soya bean crop. Hi, i am on jsa with 2 children who have just left school. .neither are going to college, so are looking for work as i am. I have been un-employed 18 months theres nothing here, and living in a small villiage i also have transport issues..but i still want work.. jsa i get is 120.00 per fortnight as they are taking 7.00 ish to pay a crissis loan.. 2 years ago i was on a diff benifit due to health issues but had to change to jsa when the health one was resolved, i got told the change of benifit would be straight away no break in money. .hum well short of it was they stopped my moeny so i had to get another crissis loan to cover the weeks of no money. right my problem now is this.. .i get 120.00 every 2 weeks thats it money wise into the home. .my lads are 16 and finished school so any benifit i had for them has also stopped so.. 120 a fortnight for 3 people to live on, my gas n elect are on payment meters as this is the only way i can pay those bills 20.00 a week elect and 10.00 a week gas this leaves..30.00 to use for food A WEEK.. hard enought ..now i have been informed that the crisis loan i took out to cover me is due to be repaid and that they are going to take 23.93 a WEEK to repay this...how can they justify that, i rang them explained that i only have 30.00 for food so cant pay back the load at their rate. .i was told As my benifits for my children have stopped i am not responsible for them any more so dont have to supply them with anything also as the pay back amount has been sorted (by them) it WILL be taken at that rate.. . this now leave me (us) with... just over 6.00 a week for food for 3 people what can i do??? i am scared/terrified how can we live please please anyone help me i dont know what to do??
