  1. I am a small business offering guitar lessons in a town with approximately 20,000 residents. I was approached by the local post office (later found out it was on behalf of) with a view to advertising on the TV within the branch. The Company Called 'The Community Network' arranged a visit and I was visited today by one of their salesmen. I'm now feeling completely duped as I have taken out a 24 month contract to display my advert of 30 seconds every 10 minutes within my local post office branch. What originally looked ok at £12 per week has escalated into £1831.20 over 2 years with a deposit (that I haven't yet paid but have given my details for) of £374.40. I originally thought this might be a good bit of advertising within the local community. Local people visiting the post office will hopefully see my advert for guitar tuition and I'll get a few calls. From what I have read both on this Forum and on others I may well have made a big mistake. Lot's of downtime, nobody looks at it e.t.c. My biggest worry is this "This agreement is a legally enforceable business to business contract and may not be cancelled or terminated except as provided by these terms and conditions." Looking at it I don't think there is any way out of the Agreement, but I'm really wanting to cancel as this is a big expense for my fledgling business. Do I have any right to cancel or should I have been more firm with the salesman and just said I can't sign up now?
  2. hi we seen an advert for a second hand Karcher Steam Cleaner £50,, so contacted the seller & arranged to buy the item, as she is in Ipswich we paid an extra £10 for delivery. so that night (28th Dec 13) I made a bank transfer to her Natwest account. We contacted her for an update & eventually she came back to me saying it was posted out on the 2nd Jan 14, but after a few days nothing so contacted her asking her for the post office reference & we will chase at our end, as some times item can go to the wrong house. She sent an abrupt message saying will let me know later & of course heard nothing, few days later sent another message & she responded saying she had already chased it up with the postoffice & has to leave it for 15 days before investigating (Which I know is true). After that didnt hear anything & so contacted the site in which we are members "Preloved" they contacted her on our behalf & then all the communication between us had disapeared (as if she had deleted her account). we contacted her by text heard nothing & tried again with Preloved & wo & behold all the "communications" were back in our history. When the 15 days were up, I rang & left a message as she had just rang my partner & hung up. I left a voicemail stating that it was my bank account & so it was my money & best speaking to me, she then rang him & hung up. The next day my partner sent a "knee jerk reaction text" trying to provoke her into responding & she did with an "ABUSIVE & THREATENING MESSAGE ABOUT KICKING THE **** OUT OF HIM & FINDING OUT WERE HE WORKS ..." he obviously rang her straight back & gave her aload of abuse back. she then started sending abusive text & stating we were threatening a pregnant woman & reporting us to the police!! bear in mind not one mention about the £60 or where is the STEAM CLEANER!! we have had to block her number & I have reported this to ACTIONFRAUD, I have had one letter with a crime number & nothing more... Is there anyway I can get my £60 back?? I have tried my own bank (HALIFAX) who say as it was a "Quick Transfer" I am not entitled to help... please bear in mind I am in financial dire & the Karcher was a treat for both me & my partner & now we have nothing. I have kept all the evidence including the voicemail & since then have seen she posted another advert for Karcher Steam Cleaner on GumTree but they wont give me any information, so I am also trying to worn other people keep away from xxxxxxx

  4. Hi im not sure if this is the right place to post but the best I could find ! My sister in law received an amount of community service last year . She only has a few months left to complete her hours but recently had a baby and also had 4 other children one of which is disabled and her partner works full time . She has no childcare to enable her to do the hours either and she is worried sick - she tried speaking to the probation people about this to no avail , is there any advice I could give her .? Thank you in advance
  5. Hey everyone. I live in a small Manitoba town in Canada at the moment, and I'm on something called the 'Opinion Think Tank', which I can almost guarantee is a name someone's child came up with several years ago. We come together every three (!!!) months to discuss issues with a single council member of the municipality. Typically, these issues are already things that have been decided on by the rest of the council and the purpose of this get together is lost to me. We literally spend our time providing opinions for things that... Well, can't be changed. This got me thinking about the 'bigger picture'. The think tank is really just the people who are friends with the council members, excluding me. I was put on as a show of generosity as I know everyone and everyone knows me through my line of work in the area. The council members are the most wealthy/influential of the town. Typical rural politics in my experience. However, the way these two bodies interact is something that is a bit of a mystery to me. Everywhere else that I have lived, we have monthly, if not biweekly, gatherings in some building downtown to discuss problems in the town, what we can do to solve them, and then address them with the council members either via flyers, addressed letters, or a genuine get-together at a scheduled date. At no point is there a total disconnect between the two parties that results in the council doing whatever they want and the folks with initiative remain stuck with their unanswered opinion. I want to change this. But how? I was thinking of investing the money in a few months or next year into flyers, and passing them out into all letterboxes around the town encouraging everyone to get together at a solidified date every month to discuss what we want to get done in the town, what our concerns are, and how we'll solve them. I am totally not clued in with the ethics behind flyer distribution, though. Can there be legal backlash with distributing flyers? Do you need a license to do so? Will the post office (or rather, the mailman) do this for me or must I go to each letterbox by myself? Furthermore, what other options do you guys have experience with in your own neighbourhoods? I'm definitely open to any suggestions as I'd love to become more involved with the matters in my town, and actually having some of a say in things. We sell a lot of food and factory parts to the city, as well as maintain a thriving farmer's market that gets traffic from the entire county each week. It would be nice to control what happens around the town, such as health hazards, events that would destroy crops, and countless other scenarios that impact how we live and what we do. I feel that expanding the level of discussion we have in my town will have a significant impact on several things: Inviting businesses to the town, controlling harmful environmental threats, and preventing legal disaster with members of the community. It has happened before that the council accepted a business into the town only to have it flop because it didn't align with what the town needed or wanted. Thanks beforehand for anything you have in mind! I'm totally interested in becoming more of a speaker in this town after I deal with my housing issues.
  6. Hello and straight away thank you to anyone who will be willing to help!!! As most of cases here, it is very personally important issue for me: I opened a Gallery and Boutique a year ago in Lewisham. I am a platform for the local Artists to display and sell their works and I organize art workshops for the local Community as well. My idea was always to give back to the community which took me on board 8 years ago when I came to live in this country. I wanted to act and contribute to the community, that's why I decided to become a CIC. I took 15 years lease not knowing the truth about the business rates as the landlord chosen not to share the knowledge with me. When I acknowledged the amount of the business rates I have to pay I started my battle to get any small business business rates relief. Even though I am a CIC and they are always qualifying for small business business rates relief in most councils - they do not here. I've been fighting with my Guardian Angel Business Advison not to die down for 10 months now. I pay £1250 rent monthly plus almost the same amount in business rates which is outrageous for me. I'm a small, locally orientated business and if I were to pay those business rates, I will just have to close in no time. I had the gallery re-evaluated - didn't help. Now we wrote a petition and collecting signatures to take t to the council at the end of May. Is there any other way I could fight? My Gallery is my baby, everyone loves it so much, customers come here to rest and to have a chat and a cup of tea, this sort of place we are. Please help. I believe there is many people much smarter then I am business - rates - wise and someone will be able to help. Thank you so much for reading. Just to give you a better idea what I am fighting for, below I pasted my petition: PETITION Save Our Community Businesses Wethe undersigned strongly believe that Lewisham Council should reconsider itsposition regarding Discretionary Rates Relief in respect of Community Groupsand Community Interest Companies. Weare particularly concerned regarding the current level of rates that aredemanded from our community assets and which make them unsustainable. We areparticularly aggrieved with the current situation regarding the new communitybased business, Doopo Doopo, located at 15 Dartmouth Road, SE233HN. Webelieve that assets within the Borough that are social businesses and clearlysupporting the local community should receive discretionary relief on the samebasis as neighbouring boroughs and trust that you will reconsider this decisionand re-evaluate the current charges. 7. Long shot but I'll ask for some advicehere... I've recently applied for a dropped kerb and vehicle crossing. This was allabout to be approved by the council when they discovered the land has beendesignated as community trust land (I believe)and as such cannot be developed on. Now I can understand this if it was a park or other greenbelt land, but this isa 10 yard strip of land from my property to a busy road in a residential area.I've never seen anyone from the community use this land, although they do thepark just down the road. It's hardly appropriate for kids to play on. The council say they can't do anything. Is there anywhere I can appeal to havethis re-classified? Cheers

  10. Hi everyone, I am urgently looking for help/advice about whether or not I am eligible for a grant. I am currently on contribution based ESA and living in an emergency housing hostel and have been for the past month. Previously, I have been sofa surfing since January due to splitting with my partner. I have managed to find a property, the cost of which is Local Housing Allowance + £10 per week from my benefit. The problem is that because the place is unfurnished I have no money to buy bed, cooker, decorating, etc. I plan to have my 2 year old son at weekends but obviously can't if I am unable to furnish and decorate the place. I called into the local job centre and was told I wasn't eligible for any help because I am not on income related benefit. Any help/advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  11. Hi All, Just a quickie, but have been informed today that my local council want an amount of money from me relating to Community Charge 22 years ago. I know that council tax is not statute barred but does the same apply to community charge? Thanks! Jackie:|
  12. Liverpool city council are pursuing me and my husband for unpaid community charges dating from this time 1991/1992.. .. They say a liability order was granted in 1995/1996 AND PUT IN THE HANDS OF JOHN CRILLY AND SONS BAILIFS....... .. I have been in dispute with the council over these claims for a long time me writing to them and them replying through the complaints procedure and out of the blue i started getting letters from a debt collection agency (newlyn) asking for me to pay and i wrote and explained to them that i was still in dispute with the council over this matter and asking the council to provide the liability order.. . After several letters going back and forth not getting any questions answered i have heard nothing since january of this year.. . Out of the blue yesterday a bailiff knocked (rossendales) at our door and said i owe x amount community charge and can i pay it.. ...i told him that we disputed the owed money and had been in contact with the council over this and as far as i was concerned thought it was sorted. He said he would sit in the car contact the council and write me a letter would post it through the door when he had done this it took him over an hour with him sitting in the car outside my front door... .. He never showed me any warrant or liability order and the letter states that hi is going off a liability orders dated feb1995 and april 1996. ..the letter also states i have 5 days to pay the outstanding amount also i must mention i am disabled and am worried that they might take my car...... Can they still do this if they cant show me a warrant or liability order i firmly beleive i do not owe this amount please please can anyone advise me asap thank you
