  2. A London banker who regularly avoided buying a train ticket on his commute to the City has been banned from working in the financial services industry. BlackRock director Jonathan Paul Burrows was caught by inspectors at Cannon Street station last year and admitted to avoiding the £21.50 fare from Stonegate in East Sussex. In total, Mr Burrows is believed to have dodged £42,550 in fares. The City watchdog said he "demonstrated a lack of honesty and integrity". "Mr Burrows has admitted that, on a number of occasions, he deliberately and knowingly failed to purchase a valid ticket to cover his entire journey," the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said. "As Mr Burrows held a senior position within the financial services industry and was an approved person, he should have been a role model for others and his conduct has fallen short of the standard expected for someone in his position," the organisation added. Mr Burrows boarded trains at Stonegate in East Sussex, where there are no ticket barriers Mr Burrows avoided paying the full fare by boarding the London-bound train at Stonegate - a rural station with no barriers - without purchasing a ticket. On arriving in London, he went through the barriers at Cannon Street Station using an Oyster travel card, incurring a maximum fare of £7.20. 'I was foolish' Mr Burrows, who is now banned for life from working in any regulated financial industries, has since paid back the £42,550, plus £450 in legal costs. Reacting to the FCA's decision, he said: "I have always recognised that what I did was foolish. I have apologised to all concerned and reiterate that apology publicly." However he added that "the size of the settlement [with Southeastern] could be said to have led to a distorted perception of the scale of my wrongdoing". "While I respect the FCA's decision today, I also regret it, coming as it did after a 20-year career in the City that was without blemish. "I recognise that the FCA has on its plate more profound wrongdoing than mine in the financial services sector, and I am sorry that my case has taken up its time at this critical juncture for the future of the City and its reputation."

  4. Our local lifestyle shop delivers our newspapers. A few weeks ago we did not receive a weekly paper so my husband went in to collect one. The male shopkeeper would not let him have a paper saying it had definitely been delivered, his wife had put the papers in the paper boys bag so they had been delivered. He raised his voice to my husband so my husband raised his voice back saying it may have been delivered but not to our house! The shopkeeper then says my husband is banned! All over a 75p paper. The following day I went into the shop and asked if customer service was any better today he immediately started shouting that I was abusing him and he wasn't going to serve me! He then stormed off and locked himself in the back room! I walked out saying I would never buy anything from the shop again. Today I went to the post office which is a small sub post office inside the shop, so I had to walk through the shop to get to it. I did not buy from the shop. The shopkeepers wife approached me and said had I had an apology from the paper boy - I said no I hadn't but it wasn't the boys apology I wanted (mistakes happen) but I wanted an apology from her husband for calling both me and my husband liars. All she kept saying was it was the paper boys fault! I kept calm and said nothing and started to walk away and the shopkeeper started shouting "you are banned and don't come to the post office either" No I have phoned the post office and apparently if these people own the shop (which they do) they can stop me walking through to access the post office. Now I can cope without using the shop but being unable to use the post office is very inconvenient indeed. Are they within their rights to do this?
  5. Around 2 years ago myself and my boyfriend were at a party. We had just hit the legal drinking age and so being fairly immature and having a new found freedom of being able to buy our own drinks legally, we didn't quite know our limits. The end of the night came and we were both fairly drunk, although I was much more sober than him and could remember what happened. The end of the night came and the majority of people had left the bar/club. Me and my boyfriend were talking to some school friends when the doorman/bouncer approached us and told us to drink up because they were shutting. Admittedly, we were going quite slow but it wasn't intentional. Not even a few minutes later the bouncer took my drink off me. I informed him that i wasn't finished but he rudely told me to f off and leave as they were closing (which in all fairness was true, we should have all been faster and left when we were asked!). My boyfriend got annoyed with what he said and told him not to be so rude. We all got up to leave and the doorman continued to bombard us and tell us to go, trying to lead us out (at this point we genuinely were going and we actually walking to the door). My boyfriend got more annoyed and basically told him to f off and that "we were leaving". The doorman then proceeded to get in his face and push him. My boyfriend, being drunk and not knowing when to stop, pushed him back. When we walked out the door the police were there. I should stress that they weren't called specifically for my boyfriend but were already there for precaution for things such as fights breaking out. The bouncer lead my boyfriend to the police, told him he was banned and the police took my boyfriend's details. My boyfriend explained that he was in the wrong but also that the doorman had also pushed him. We left and haven't been back since. My boyfriend was never charged and he didn't sign anything for the pub/club to confirm that he was banned. There is a family party happening in a few months time at the same pub/club. My boyfriend is invited. Only a couple of my family members know of the incident and don't really feel like explaining it to others if we get turned away. I obviously also want to save him and my family any embarrassment by being asked to leave after an immature little incident that happened 2 years ago. Is there a chance he could go back and not get turned away? The pub/club is fairly local but is used a lot for parties and events.
  6. Please help! The other day I was caught scanning something as bananas on the self-checkout when they weren't. I was taken to the back room to see the manager, who decided not to call the police (thank God), but did take a copy of my driving licence and aive me a letter banning me from any Sainsbury's in the country. What I want to know is, will anything else happen to me? The letter he gave me mentioned other people who may be getting in touch for some kind of claim. Also, what will have been done to my driving licence? Am I on some kind of register somewhere? Will future employers be told about this? I'm a student, and don't want my career and prospects ruined by this.
  7. Hi, I was banned for life from sainsburys 3 years ago. I was going through a break up and severly depressed at the time so when my son opened a toy car and put in with his others I didnt notice and just assumed he picked up empty packaging so I discarded it. when pulled up by security I was made to pay for item and banned for life. My real question is they took a copy of my driving licence and am now wondering wheather they might still have it and what they do with it? Im wary as I dont like to think its laying around with all my details on.
  8. Hi everyone, its my first post on here and its going to be a pretty long one. Basically I went to a hungry horse pub with some friends last month and the visit was pretty mixed overall. The food wasnt too bad and we didnt really have any complaints initially, apart from missing an item on a few of the meals. The service wasnt great to be honest, the table was dirty when we arrived, it took 45 minutes for our dirty plates to be moved and when we left the desert plates were still on the table. We then took part in a music quiz and we should have won this, but as we were round the other side of the bar the manager didn't hear us and by the time I had made my way round it was too late. His response to this wasnt great, he suggested that we just get closer to the bar when theres one song left on our card. It was afterwards when we went to close the bill that we spotted that the cost of our deserts hadn't been taken off the bill, something we thought we were entitled to as part of an offer that is run by the pub on a thursday. I queried this with the manager and he was pretty unhelpful really, he wasn't willing to even agree that it should at least be stated more clearly on the menu that the meals we had were not included in the offer. Another member of staff did have a bit of an attitude problem and said we woudn't get the deserts knocked off because one of the group works there and they'd already give us a discount. we paid the bill and were willing to put it down to experience. After this I posted a review on tripadvisor, giving it a 1 star overall and was pretty accurate with my description of the whole evening. It then became apparent that the manager had seen the review and left a response of the site that was pretty well fabricated by himself. Even after this I was still willing to let the whole thing go. It was when he apparently pulled my friend to one side in work and told him that I bas barred from the pub and basically threatened to hit me if he seen me again. This is what got me riled up more than anything. I have no reason to believe that my friend is not telling the truth in this situation, I think that he wouldnt make something like that up as surely it would affect his job security. So after this I emailed greene king (owners of hungry horse) to inform them of the situation and told them everything, not leaving any details out. I have waited a few weeks for a response in the post as promised in a reply from them and have received one today in the post. To say I am disappointed with the response would be an understatement. The letter says that they have spoken to the manager and investigated fully. They have then stated 'that my behaviour on my day of the visit was inappropriate and was affecting the enjoyment of some of our other customers'. It then goes on to say that ' I am therefore supporting the house managers legal right to ask you to leave on the day in question and to refuse you future entry to the establishment. This decision is final and not open to further discussion'. Now this has really disappointed me. At no point did we behave inappropriately and I cant believe that a manager of a pub would fabricate this to justify banning me from the premises. Also at no point were we asked to leave the pub, again I am astonished by this claim. Basically I am asking for help on where to go next. I have emailed greene king again to try and point out that what he has said is not true but I dont expect a response from them, especially when you consider how blunt they have been in the letter. Even though I have no desire to return there, I don't want the manager in the pub to feel that he can do something like this and effectively win. Thanks in advance, James (hope I've been clear enough here, just a lot of information to get across)
  9. Hi folks, This is my first ever visit to this site so please be gentle My Mums rather stupid ex partner was caught drink driving (driving from pub to his house) a couple of weeks ago. I dont know what he blew, my Mum never asked him, but they went through all the normal procedures-he was arrested, charged and was up in court last week. He told my Mum, who by the way has never driven and has had her mind warped by this guy for the last 8 years, that he had NOT been banned and only received a fine. She believed him until friends and family told her otherwise. He HAD been banned but was still drink driving and the idiot got caught AGAIN 4 days after he had been in court for the same offence! Does anyone know what kind of sentence/conviction/penalty that can carry? Also is there a forum on here where i can get advice for my Mum re harrassment as the guy ive mentioned has been following her for the last 3 years since they split and is aggressive and controlling and getting worse. Shes been nice to him just to keep the peace because she scared to death of this man. She found him snooping around the outside of her house the other night and the police are involved but she is scared of any repurcussions as hes a very nasty piece of work. Thank you in advance
  10. over 2 years ago a store loss prevention clerk tried to accuse me of shoplifting. the cops were called and the store clerk banned me from the store. the cop let me turn myself in 10 days after the incident and I was released on my own recognance.....however you spell it..... the judge said there was no evidence so he placed me on 1 year probation with no court cost, no community service...all I had to do was stay out of trouble for 1 year and report back to court after the year was up. the judge threw the case out and had it expunged from my record...so here's my question.... Can I now return to the store to shop or am I still banned????? how do you find out if you are banned because the incident was expunged from my record???

  13. Hi I embarrassed myself a little yesterday and got into a rather bad argument with the manager of my local Morissons, and the security guard had to step in, all over the cost of an item. I got presented with 2 options; 1) Call the police 2) accept to be banned from the store and leave I decided just to go with ban, as I've never been involved with the police and didn't really want anything on my record, especially something so trivial. Know I've read the document the security guard gave me, to say I've been banned, it states I've been banned from all Morissons stores?????? Are they able to police this or if I went into a store in a different town would I be Ok? Thanks
  14. A disabled woman was barred from a tribunal to decide whether she was entitled to benefits – because she was in a wheelchair. Sylvia Middleton, 65, was turned away by security staff in case a fire broke out in the five-storey building. It later emerged that wheelchair users have been denied entry to Acorn House in Basildon, Essex, for three months over the misplaced health and safety concerns. They included others attending disability tribunals and workers attempting to visit offices in the mixed-use block. ‘They said they couldn’t guarantee my safety and they didn’t let my wheelchair upstairs,’ said Miss Middleton, who was summoned to the fourth-floor hearing by the Department for Work and Pensions to be reassessed for Disability Living Allowance. ‘Why are they holding disability tribunals in a building disabled people aren’t allowed in?’ Divorcée Miss Middleton has been without her £50-a-week payments since December 2011 when they were suspended after an ‘administration error’. She has been managing on her £140-a-week pension in her two-bedroom bungalow in Pitsea, Essex, while waiting for the benefit to be reinstated. After she and her son, Peter, were refused entry on February 2 she was told she would have to wait another two months for her case to be heard – this time 12 miles away in Southend. 16. And the DVLA does nothing And the BPA does nothing (no surprises there) And they try to tell us that POPLA is independent!!! Oh how we laughed.
  17. I have just been banned from Morrisons for 'shopping suspiciously' in the beers and wines section. I often go to the store, and most of the time I purchase goods. This occasion I didn't as I knew that what I was looking for was cheaper at the Coop around the corner. I was approached by the security guard as I was leaving. He asked me if I was carrying anything I didn't pay for. I protested and said I wasn't, and said he could search me. He said he didn't need to, instead instructing me not to return to the store. Again I protested, but politely asked why this was. He said he didn't like the way I was shopping, and that I was acting 'suspiciously'. I asked if I could appeal this; he seemed surprised, and responded with a long explanation about the process, ie. contacting head office. Clearly he was hoping this would seem to complex and I would just accept the store's verdict. What makes me angry the most, is that they have presumed I was going to steal something - hardly innocent until proven guilty. If I had taken something, I would of course accept I shouldn't be allowed to return. I have never taken anything. I know some of the staff and they would agree that I never would. What also makes me angry is that they now presumably have me on a 'rogue gallery', again criminalising my character. This itself is a breach of my privacy and my ban is a breach of my freedom as a consumer. I don't know what to do, I want to take this further. Does anyone want to advise me on what to do? I was thinking of heading to the Citizens Advice Bureau as a first stop - appealing to their head office seems like a wild goose chase, and obviously would end with them upholding the store's ban. Cheers, Alex B.

  19. I ended up walking out of Boots with an energy drink in my hand. My newborn was crying hysterically, the shop was crowded with christmas shoppers and I was claustrophobic. Decided to walk out to avoid the long long cue. Tried to justify the stealing to myself by saying I spend hundreds of pounds here anyway, a drink wont kill anyone, but the lack of sleep and thirst I had then, would! Just as I walked out, couple of steps ahead, the security guard, in his uniform came after me and asked me to follow him. Took me to this tiny room, asked politely if he could check my bags, and the reciepts from all the other shopping which I showed him. There was another young security guy there, who commented 'you dont want to go that way, really do you?' (as if I was planning to become a burglar in the near future). I was asked to look into the camera while he clicked, asked for name and address (all I had was a Bodyshop membership card to show him and no debit or credit cards luckily with me that day) I gave him all accurate information, let him click my picture, and recieved a 'Show Cause Notice' for inappropriate behavious or something like that. He said that I was banned from entering Boots all my life, if I still enter the shop, I will be asked to leave, if I refuse I may be arrested. They will recognize me by scanning my eyes, as my picture is on the records, my eyes will automatically be scanned everytime I enter the store. I was not fined, but was told that I could have been fined upto £150 and could have been asked to report to the police station to pay it off. I asked the security how long id be banned from, much as I hate to admit, I do like Boots, and was extremely ashamed and regretted what I did. Considering that I have a well paid job, a family and a happy life. The security guy said...'well, to be honest, I would say you're banned from all the Boots in the entire UK for life, but I tell you what, if you come into this shp when Im on duty, I probably wont take action' What was that supposed to mean? I could feel eyes on me of the shopkeepers in other stores i visited that day. Its been almost 4 years, and the sight of Boots traumatizes me, I havent ever used my Boots card again so I dont know if thats blocked or not. But on a couple of occassions I was dragged into Boots by friends and family (no one knows about this except my husband), literally scaring the wits out of me, lol, I actually walked around the shop with my eyes closed, or covered by my hands so my 'eyes would not be scanned' and I wouldnt be asked to leave infront of my dear ones. I have been to Boots on a few occassions now, havent been questioned, but is that purely because I was lucky, or has the ban worn off, or was the ban just for that particular store. i dont have the courage to call them up and ask them myself. Am I going to be scared of enetring Boots all my life, or can I forget about the event and get on with life? Can they really scan my eyes, still? :???: Thanks for reading my post out, every input and response will be much appreciated.
