Personally I would write to this address:- Member Service, Nationwide Building Society, Kings Park Road, Moulton Park, Northampton NN3 6NW. I pulled this off the website, it wouldn't hurt to request contact detaisl for Phillip Williamson the director as he gets shirty about complaints as simple as yours. Complain ASAP about the lack of cancelling, demand the charges back from the date you first sent the form to cancel, plus something to compensate you for your stress (NB this fee is getting interest charged on it too!!!). Then I would begin claming the charges back which will allow you to take a decent chunk off of the debt. If you put them in the same letter then that will onloy confuse things. I'll llok out for contact info for Phillip at work.

Hopkino V Nationwide - Complications have arisen..
indebtstudent replied to Hopkino's topic in Nationwide
Yes don't be put off. I must admit I've never heard of this set of events before but I've not been here long. Stick to the templates and you will be fine. At least they're getting quicker at paying out some money... -
Hi im new and will be claiming against nationwide
indebtstudent replied to lilmiss's topic in Nationwide
"well they cant fob me off that easily!!! " I work for Nationwide and what the person told you in the branch is (to the best of my knowledge) correct. The branch does have to charge £5 per statement and doesn't have access to them going back that far. Very very few of my colleagues are even aware of this issue. I queired our policy and basically any charges queries are sent onto head office and when you start court proceedings it gets passed to legal compliance so the people on the from line and even the admin guys are kept in the dark about outcomes. Something to hide perhaps? Stick to the templates one here and try not to get mad at staff as they're only doing thier job and don't have any understanding of this issue (I only know from coming on ehre). Oh and you will win there's no doubt about that. -
Lots of threads about direct debits but I didn't see one with my question so I'll ask it here. Does anyone have any idea by what process banks and building societies decide whether to pay a direct debit or not? We all know sometimes they are returned and sometimes they can be paid without thier being sufficient in the account but surely this process isn't just random?

Question for bank staff about how this would work
indebtstudent replied to thecornflake's topic in A Word from the Banks
thecornflake make sure it was indeed the bank that reinstated the direct debits. It is not unknown, in my experience, to cancel a direct debit only for the company to set up a new one. Unpleasent sure but not the banks fault. -
Help! (new here) - NATIONWIDE BANK
indebtstudent replied to medicgirl's topic in Welcome to the Consumer Forums
I concur with the above advice, I know for Nationwide it does not matter where you send the letter. All the filing is done centrally so sending it to the branch will have it sent off. I can try and look up an office for Nationwide but mail doesn't generally go there directly so it might look a bit fishy. Send it recorded to the branch then it will get sent on in the internal mail which is very secure. Oh and one more tip, address letters to NAtionwide Building Society, shows u pay attention to deaitl and don't forget to sign the SAR because all employees should carry out a signiture verification check. -
Yup, out of interest who did you send it to?
-
How long will you OD take to clear? If they take that away and add more charges it's just more you will get back... I would just add up the charges when they appear in the main statement. See others on here for details of calculating the interest (I understand this can be done from the date the charges were applied, over six years that's a lot and worth claiming).
-
SAR Sent yesterday (recorded) the ball is definately rolling....
-
They will try to scare you but if you follow the steps on here they WILL pay. At least that's what all the evidence suggests.

Allow me to assit, I currently work for Nationwide and I can sort out the confusion. The only respectable thing about the way Nationwide claims these (unlawful!) charges is they apply them to the account twenty eight days AFTER the next statement which is preferable to whipping them away right away. So if I were to go overdrawn now the charge would be notified at the bottom of the statement I get at end of Jan. The charge would not come out of my account until the end of Feb (ish). Therefore I suggest your best bet is to total only the charges that appear in the main body of the statement (the bit with columns). hope this helps, if I can help anymore let me kno.w

Indeed.

Well Re Ombudsmen whether they find for or against you really doesn't matter, if you're twisted like me you will take satisfaction from knowing that every complaint the obudsmen investigate costs the organisation money. I forget the exact amount but I think it's a good few hundred quid...

Hi to all as you may or may not be aware I'm doing the legwork to claim back some money Natwest has charged my brother. He was out of work for some months and they kept piling the charges on his current account (his MPPI didn't pay out where should/can I complain about this?). Also they in general were not helpful at all which is not what thier leaflet suggests. I've done some reading and knocked up the access request (with £10 cheque of course) I'm also sending two further letters of complaint regarding the fact the MPPI was not explained properly to him (ie he was never covered so paying the premium was pretty pointless) and also the stuff they in thier leaflet isn't true. Contact us as soon as possible if you are in financial difficulties. He did and they kept nailing on the charges and the mortgage people said "we can't deal with you unless you're three months behind". what kind of crazy system is that? The account is roughly £3,000 overdrawn (limit £1,100) and they've passed the matter over to a debt recovery agency so any advice on this side of things would be appreciated too. Know this is a lot to take it but I'm having them if it's the last thing I do!!!

Palabra/Natwest Data protection act breaches
indebtstudent replied to Palabra's topic in NatWest Bank
I realize this message might be old new (still new to this forum) but I work for Nationwide and we're constantly reminded to verify customer's before releasing any information. This can cause problems especially with children's accounts (once they reach a certain age) but I can see why we need to take these steps what with all the fraudsters out there. I would definately complain to the branch manager and take it higher if you have to. I don't know what that particular organisations limit is for discretionary payments, (I wouldn't mention it) however I would point out pretty much what people have said here that chain of events is a breach of the data protection act. Out of interest was there any harm done? Not that that takes away from the principle (ie any nosey begger could've heard the info!!!) -
Oneofthem you are not able to put yourself in another person's shoes. My brother lost his job and the bank's helpful response? They hammaered him with £2,000 of charges. His PPI didn't cover him either, oh and when he called to let them know his circumstances (re hiw mortgage) they told him to come back once he was three months behind. Do you think this acceptable? I profoundly disagree with what you say and I work for a Building Society!!!!

apr's rising? Well you didn't expect them to remain the same did you?

I work for Nationwide and the thing with this sort of transfer is... Well in branch you don't really have somebody sat around all day to do this sort of transfer yet people quite reasonably expect to be able to walk in and do it. Also, though the process sounds simple, you would not believe the errors people make. This means the employee has to explain very clearly that the customer is responsible for any errors in the data entered and has to sign to that effect.

The end of free banking... It'll never happen!
indebtstudent replied to thegoodsamaritan's topic in A Word from the Banks
Well isn't it useful here to look at credit cards? One minute the OFT lays down the amount of £12 (not saying this is a reasonalbe charge, merely the amount they set down to benefit consumer's now). As far as I am aware the majority of credit card companies now charge the £12. However I know the APR on the MBNA card I never u has gone up substantially (approx 7%!). If you take away something which generates revenue then financial institutions are going to try to make up the shortfall from somewhere else. Note I'm defending the charges rather I'm looking rationally at the way such insititutions work. The big danger of removing the charges is that the people who are likely to be charged to have a bank account are those with the least ability to pay. It's a tough call. -
Hello there I'm new here and I'm actually interested in making a claim for my bro. Without going into too much detial Natwest really didn't help him when he was out of work, they've hammered him with two thousand pounds worth of charges. If I can get this money back... well I'd feel great as I could finally say I was able to help out my big brother. Thanks in advance for any advice you give, BTW I don't know if you will be interested but I was directed to this site from the motley fool website I think most people who post there have a high opinion of this site. I also work for Nationwide Building Society (NOT BANK!!!!!!!) and plan on raising my concerts at the earliest opportunity, can't banks and building societes see they're walking into a PR nightmare? Look I've gotten all carried away now. Anyway hi and can I just say I love places like this? The support every step of the way and the willingness to help out others is very refereshing indeed I'll be posting in the Natwest forum once I get finsihed with the reading...
