  1. hi all, i'm really new to all this and this maybe be a stupid question but all i'm after is a yes / no answer!! I've been charged fees for occasional missed payments for the last 6 years from my Abbey Mortgage - can I pursue a claim against these or are we just talking bank accounts here?? Many thanks for any advice Richard
  2. Hi all, my apologies for my ignorance here (still fairly new) but over the years I've incurred charges on mortgage which has been with Abbey. Possibly a stupid question but can I reclaim these charges or is it just bank accounts we are taliking about here???? Thanks in advance, Richard
  3. Thanks for the advices Bill - I'm still getting to grips with how helpful everyone is on this site !!!! I think i'll certainly try to get all of my statements from my bank but as this is my first claim just go for the 6 yeras initially and hopefully as I get the hang of things pursue the remaining charges afterwards. Thanks again Bill - you've been a great help!! Richard:)
  4. Guys, Thanks so much for the advices - I'm only at stage 1 of what I guess could be quite a long process, but Bill, would you suggest - if in fact I can obtain statements from the opening of my account in 1991 - to put one claim in for all charges from 1991 to present of just claim for the last 6 years initially and try to pursue 1991 to 2000 chages later on ???? Many thanks again for any help. Richard
  5. also am i correct in thinking that if i have copies of the statements from more than 6 years ago and can therefore see the charges then I can can claim these charges back?? the obtaining of these statements could be worth '000's to me!! Has anyone else had any luck in getting statements beyond 6 years old and if so how were your letters worded??
  6. hi bankfodder, i've had a first direct account since 1991 although i do not have any statements. i dread to think of the charges i've paid them but the vast majority would have been from 1991 to 2000. i'm going to write to them to request the statements and am assuming that they will only send me back the last 6 years - do you have any advice??? I noticed post JonChris as follows:- "If they claim they do not retain records over 6 years old demand to know when, where & how they where destroyed. Look below worked for me!" Basically I'm wondering if anyone has any success in obtaining statements from more than 6 years ago - either originals or microfiched copies??? I do not want to send my SAR without knowing what to request. Richard:confused:
  7. thanks so much for the info Rooster - i did say i was new to this!!! although i thank you for your advices i guess its not the news i wanted as i dread to think of the amount of charges i incurred from 1991 to 2000 - guess i'm not going to be able to get any of these back- shame!!
  8. Hi all, Excuse my ignorance but I'm a bit of a newbie to this. Having spent the best past of the day browsing the site I'm still not clear whether anyone has been able to reclaim charges from more than 6 years ago. I'm sure that there are people out there they have had accounts for more than 6 years but it is recently clear whether the banks are only refunding charges for the last 6 years of an account or for the entirety of the account since it opened. In my case I have an account with a bank since 1991 and have no statements - I'm requesting details of charges from them and am assuming they're are only going to provide me with the last 6 years - is this generally the case??? Many thanks in advance to anyone who can advise on this , richard
  9. Thanks for the advices again likely lad although possibly the news I didn't want to hear!!! I sincerely hope I'm wrong but it seems banks will only send back charges details or statements for the last 6 years in most cases. am i therefore correct that if this is the case I can only claim any charges from 2000 - 2006 I am not going to be able to claim the vast majority of my charges which were incurred between 1991 - 2000??? Richard
  10. many thanks for the reply likelylad - feel like Ive got a friend already that can help!!! I'll send off the letter then and see what they come back with - i just assumed that they are only going to send me back statements or details of charges incurred for just the last six years and not since the account was opened - is this generally the case?? Thanks again, Richard
  11. hi all - apologies in advance but I'm completely new to all this!!! I had a First Direct which I opened approx 10 years ago which i dread to think of the amount i paid in charges. obviously the first thing i need to do is get my statements from them, however i know that i would have incurred loads of charges from more than 6 years ago. am i correct in thinking that unless i can get statements from First Direct from more than 6 years ago I cannot claim these charges??? Has anyone had any luck in getting statements from the entirety of an account from FD or do they just sent the last 6 years. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help, richard
  12. Hi all - i guess like most on this site I have been paying untold amounts to various banks, mortgage companies and credit cards for the last 15 years or so. Having found this site initially from Money Saving Expert I'm truly hoping that at some point in the future I can claim some of it back. This is my first post ever to a forum site and I apologise if I'm doing something wrong!! I have been on the site all day reading FAQS and generally browsing other forums. Please excuse my ignorance but I just want to check if I am able to claim credit card charge, charges incurred by mortgage company and also charges paid on current accounts?? My first query that I have is that I have one old account wirth First Direct where I know that most of the charges may have been incurred over 6 years ago. Am I correct in thinking that unless I can obtain statements from First Direct showing these charges I will be unable to claim them?? I will be writing to First Direct for my first claim so i get to know what I'm doing before persuing the other banks but I'm already nervous of writing to First Direct and only being provided with the last 6 tears statements when I need to be asking for all statements since the account opened. Many thanks in advance for anyones help on this and he commences my long task ahead of me!!! Richard
