  1. I have yet to sample the delights(?) of the rice salad. I would like to try it before making judgement. Any chance of an invite (apart from the Liverpool gathering. I would really liked to have met Janet)
  2. Thanks for the support Lula, next time we could just forget to tell Crusher which pub we are in. (and pick one that has a reasonably intelligent barman)
  3. Sorry but I'm in Kent that weekend. Please come to Newcastle (I can even put you and Mr Bookworm up (although you may have to go back early while me and Mr BW go clubbing again)) If not I will come to London to see you
  4. I never thought I would see the day when Bookie would leave the site team. Bookie was/is my mentor, fellow Barclays challenger (even though she says I wimped out), and good friend. I had the most tremendous support from her when I was a member of the site team. I wish you well in your retirement and hope to meet up with you in the near future. All the best Steve
  5. The post that I have found funniest over the last few years of being on CAG has to be this one. This is in response to a member that had settled with help from CAG, was not even asked for a donation but was accusing dave of making a profit from CAG. I will confirm here and now, as a friend of Daves and someone who has spent many a night on Dave's sofa that there is no fortune gained from the work on CAG (if there was I wouldn't have had to buy my fair share of beer!!) Steve
  6. Unfortunately I am no longer part of the site team and have no access to change thread titles anymore . I'm sure bookie or one of the others can do that for you. I hope to be there. I drink in Centurian frequently so I know how to get there. Tiglet, you can bring your niece as chaperone if you wish
  7. and she told me off for banter lol I'm only over the water in Gateshead so easy for me to get there. For anyone not too local I have a spare bedroom.
  8. I cannot believe it. A whole six post thread about Dr Who with mention of tardis in the title and not one peep from a certain mod.
  9. Well not exactly complaints, just wondered how someone at CAG had discovered discovered my abilities in a completely unrelated area. Own up Booky, was it you? If it was you can you tell me tell me who tipped you off??
  10. You can count me in as long as I have a bit of notice. It would be good to meet up with you all. Steve Edit, just noticed date in box above. Will see what I can do
  11. George Orwell - 1984 Vladimir Nabokov - Lolita Harper Lee - To kill a mockingbird
  12. Schindler's List - The only film ever to make me cry (well ok, since I was 7 and cried at Charlotte's web)
  13. I did know a guy who had an incident with a milkbottle while at school. It was one of the old 1/3pint ones. well after a little while 'experimenting' he found that it had worked up a bit of suction and he was unable to remove it without smashing it.
  14. Unfortunately I find it incredibly difficult to find a suitable avatar. Any suggestions (this is not an excuse for a particular supermod to change it to something silly!!!)
  15. I think the content of a lot of sweets and packaged food has changed a lot in the last 20 or so years since you were at school. My brother Matt had an intolerance to a lot of chemical additives and his behaviour was directly attributable to them. This problem is getting far worse now
  16. While we are in the pedantic mood. It bug me when people use apostrophes when they are pluralising a word. Potato's etc. Also I don't like Americanised spellings of words, such as all the words which end in 'ised', everyone seems to use the American 'ized' now (probably because the default dictionary for the computer spell checkers is US English).
  17. Even as a pacifist I have a trouble with individuals who joined the armed forces who, the minute a war looks likely, hold their hands up and say "I don't like it". You have an agreement when you sign up that the force you joined can send you anywhere to 'defend' your nation. I also believe that, if a person has served and has suffered injuries then the MOD should pay for the healthcare and, if the injured person is unable to work afterwards, a living wage for the rest of their life.
  18. As she had not ever, and has not since, committed a criminal act in her life she didn't have the knowledge required maybe.
  19. The question was: Should we name and shame?? Why shame those who already probably feel shame for what they have been forced by circumstance to do?
  20. Now that is a surreal post. I take it you are offering no further argument??? (do you want me to swap sides and help you??)
  21. Yeah right!!! Pull the other one Next thing you'll be telling me is that white van man has to follow other traffic regulations too. Maybe looking out for bikers next
  22. I don't think that they should be named and shamed at all. For the majority the shaming effect wouldn't work as they probably felt shame while they were doing it but could see no other option. There now follows a little bit about my history that makes me feel the way I do When I was 7 my dad left my mum and, as she was the only person that could look after me, she had to leave her job. For nearly a year my mum lived on benefits. Benefits which, after paying the routine bills (gas and electric only, we had no telephone) left just enough money for food and that was it. My mum quite often didn't eat as there wouldn't be enough food for both of us. Things came to a head just as she met the man who is now my step-dad. She cried for nearly a day because she burnt the kettle (old stove type one) and couldn't afford a new one. The only social outlet was the Gingerbread single parents charity. My mum still feels shame that she never had the money to pay for me to go on a trip with Gingerbread, which they let me go on for free. She feels this shame 23 years later. I think if my mum had the opportunity to play the system at that time, just to earn a few extra pounds to help her cope, maybe to be able to feed herself a little better, maybe to buy me a new coat for school so I wasn't bullied, maybe to even be able to throw me a birthday party that she could invite my friends round to. I think she would have jumped at the chance, but I know that she would not ever be able to get over the shame of it, like she still mentions the kindness of Gingerbread and her embarrassment over it. A large portion of these 'cheats' are living lives like this now. Give them a break. They are carried out in public not because of the naming and shaming side of it, but to demonstrate the justice in the system. Justice that would be denied by having a closed legal system.
  23. My father researched he family tree when he was able to. He found the easiest route was along what should be the hardest route, the maternal side all the way up. Even though my surname isn't common in Kent, he has had great difficulties going any further than the generation above the living relatives, even though we know they lived there
