So, after being rather stupid in my younger days, I have found myself with just under £5k worth of debt (£4930) for nothing really. Most of it has been passed onto recovery companies (HFO, Cabot, Lowell Portfolio - never heard of any of them) and I'm just wanting some advice on how to settle any of it. While I have a steady income it isn't great and I just cannot afford to pay the full amounts as they have requested. They all have default dates from 2006/2007 but I have no idea what this means (is it the date I missed a payment?) and they were all stared between 1998 and 2001. A friend suggested offering a lower amount to fulfil the payments before they're written off, apparently she did this. Is it an option? How would I approach this? Totally screwed up my credit report, can't believe I was so stupid
