  1. Not VAT but i had a bill from the tax man for several hundred pounds, As i had been off work sick for almost 2 years it puzzled me. I phoned them and they could offer no explanation, The only taxable income i have is incapacity benefit. Took me several attempts to explain to the muppet on the phone if my only taxable income is IB and that is below my tax code why do i need to pay tax. After about 20 minutes on the phone he suddenly went oh yeah, And i never heard anything again.
  2. Yoy may find the panels are actually off the same production line as the original panels. I have replaced a heater motor on an A4 Audi wanted over £300 for a new one, GSF sold me an identical motor for under £80. Same brand same markings except the tiny little date stamp, Obviously the old motor was 8 years old. Because it came in a plain box saved £250 or so. On the other hand they could be rubbish, Like my mates MK3 mondeo estate bumper had to be trimmed where it didnt fit the bodywork and flexed like a shopping bag.
  3. Hope your bank is better than mine, Halifax were useless when i tried to reclaim a payment wrongly taken. Bank even sided with the company despite my proof. Insurance policy for 1 year with 10 monthly payments, No mention of any automatic renewal i double checked. After the 10 months were up i cancelled the direct debit, Sold the car a few weeks later but as there was such a short time left on the policy i left it to expire. Classic policy. Then i heard nothing more from the insurance but 6 weeks later they took a payment from my bank, How when i had only signed an agreement for 10 payments and had also cancelled the direct debit. Even when i showed the person in the halifax they said i needed to jump through hoops to get my money back. I gave up and forgot about it. It was under £20. I would have been a bit more insistant if it was £400 though. How do you get them to refund without quibbles??
  4. When i reported a driver who damaged my car whilst parked he got 6 points for failing to report it. I only found out when the police wrote to be with the courts findings and the details of his insurance. I contacted them a few days later and they knew nothing about it.
  5. The garage had the car in their posession for at least 2 months after repairing it, They contacted the owner every week to see when they were going to collect the car, They made various excuses. The garage owner got fed up of moving the car in and out every day, The previous owner obviously did not contest the application for a logbook, As they would have been sent a form saying someone is trying to re-register a car they still have paperwork for. I didnt ask for proof as the garage owner had been in that premises for as long as i can remember and still there to this day. I knew he would have given me my money back if the owner decided to cause trouble. I also knew the garage bill was way over what the car was worth, Even before he added storage costs. Anyway the oil pump failed a few years later and i fitted a V8 instead. That was easier that it sounded.
  6. I was thinking the same, How long does it take to repair a lock and why wait several weeks? Charging storage fee's? I bought a car from a garage like that, Had been towed in & had the head gasket done. Paying for my fuel i enquired about the car as i was looking for one, He said want to buy that one for £250. Told me what happened I applied for the logbook which came quite quickly and paid for the car. He said the garage bill and storage charges would far outweigh the cost of the car if the owner decided to cause trouble.
  7. Adding to heliosuk's 1st post... You wont be able to collect the cars from the auction or drive them home, You wont be able to tax them. Bought my last car from a small part time trader, He had the dealer/trade slip and he taxed the car for me to save waiting for my insurance certificate to arrive. Should get the dealers transfer slip, You contact your insurance and add them to your policy. Make sure you get a policy that covers drivers for test drives. Read the small print. Insist on seeing ID if in any doubt. Last thing you want is someone crashing your car and find its not insured. Lots of policies now exclude driving other cars, Under 25's are usually a no no and those that are covered are 3rd party only. So your car doesnt get repaired. Trying to hide you are a trader and not having correct procedures could backfire badly.
  8. All down to the smallprint i guess. I presume you failed to pay and they cancelled the policy for that reason. When you took out a new policy they would have asked have you had any insuranced cancelled or refused in the past 5 years. I presume also you said no. It maybe worth contacting them and sweet talking them into re-instating the policy, They may not pass on the no claims discount to another company, If you have any that is.
  9. If an accident was my fault and you refused to give details i would say ok no problem, Then dash round to the police station and report you for failing to stop and supply details. You get 6 points and a hard time getting insurance in the future. I would rather give insurance details than give my personal details out.
  10. Its strange reading posts saying someone is proud of me, I dont feel very proud. I did answer the phone today, Withheld number. Said they could claim back PPI and late payment fees,Interest etc, I said i dont have any loans or CC's they said am i sure. I said yes & hung up. Fishing exercise maybe? They didnt ask for me by name and i hung up before they could ask me anymore questions.
  11. Depending how badly the bush has come unstuck. Depends what/where the bush is. Sometimes its cheaper to buy a complete arm than replace bushes. Fiat panda bottom balljoint springs to mind, Removing and pressing the balljoint in was a pain. A complete are was only £4 more, If paying garage rates that would have saved you in labour charges.
  12. Depends how much damage has actually been done, If its just cosmetic and just slotting a new bumper on would be safe. Get a breakdown on the repair costs, Could be that the parts are cheap but painting the bumper adds a fair bit to the repair. Would you be willing to drive around with a bumper a different colour? A bit of time on ebay or at the breakers could save you on the costs of painting any items. Should have bought one of those VW Polo's where every panel is a different colour, Nobody would notice.
  13. The way i read this is you contacted autoglass and arranged repair knowing they were not the company your insurance use. And also knowing the fact your insurance would only re-imburse you £150. Are you sure they would only re-imburse that or that would be your excess charge if you use a different company? My policy states winscreen repair is £75 excess unless a 3rd party is used then the excess would be £150. Have a read. I would think you need to pay autoglass then argue with your insurers after. There is no contract between autoglass and your insurers. They use preferred companies as i presume they are a part of the same group of companies so just passing profits around between themselves or get some form of special deals or discounts. If you dont use them the excess is usually higher. Its all in the terms and conditions so not much you can do.
  14. He closed the bonnet as a goodwill gesture? The other driver did not have to help i think he had the goodwill to stop and help. He damaged it accidently but he did do the damage, No point him trying to get out of that. As it was not a motoring accident your friends car insurance may say nothing to do with us, Legal protection may help though. Can he get an estimate to have the work done cheaper? In the end though they would need to take your friend to court to pay for the costs. Depends how far each side are willing to take it. I bet the driver got into trouble as well. Probably a memo saying drivers are not allowed to help motorists. One driver does something silly and we would get memo's for months afterwards.
  15. What is each fine actually for? Same fine or a fine for different reasons. Not displaying a disc, Not declaring SORN, Untaxed, Towing charges etc. Fine increasing because you have not paid? A bit more info may help you get a better response.
  16. I did wonder once whilst i was at the doctors a guy was taking pictures. Me being suspicious but thought it was either a DC or the DHSS following me after someone who dislikes me made a false complaint, Saying i was working. Must have been the most boring person to follow, I had not been out for 2 weeks prior to the appointment. After the docs we were going to the supermarket but had to return home before we got half way then back out again. Then i didnt go out for nearly another week. Maybe its me being suspicious though. The DHSS made an appointment to visit me to check i was getting the right benefits, Fishing to see if i was working more like but i had nothing to hide.
  17. 2 more letters from mackenzie hall today, It is imperative that i contact them within 72 hours and settle the account. Then goes on to say they will not hesitate to take action if i dont pay up. Well i wish they would do something besides sending the same draft letters every week. Hesitation has already cost them money, Also the letter was dated 8 days ago so i presume thats been and gone. Numbers all changed from 0845 to 0844 now i see.
  18. Sorry but after watching your video, You seem to be lacking something. I was laughing like i do when i watch the poliece interceptors show. They stop someone and that person denies everything even though they are being recorded on camera. You mentioned not registering the car with the DVLA, If that was the case i think you would have been even worse off. You would have no current documents to prove the car was yours. So they would have still taken it and fined you even more for not updating the V5 documents. You said what if the insurance papers were a few days late, You could have taxed it a few days late or taxed it online i guess. But they clamped it and towed it, So i presume it wasnt just a few days. Found it funny when you said what if it was a million pound supercar would they still have towed it for the sake of a couple of hundred pound tax, Well yes they would. No exemptions. Seem them take a £100k mercedes on the interceptors show that was stopped for no tax.
  19. Maybe they sent off the logbook by mistake or someone bought it & changed their mind. Check the dates of ownership. Or maybe the DVLA got it wrong.
  20. I have had a dealer put trade plates on and give me the keys and let me off on my own, Maybe he was hoping i would steal it. It was a bit of a shed.
  21. Someone hit my car whilst it was parked many years ago, I was on holiday at the time. Neighbour noted the number down and i reported it to the police. They prosecuted the driver and sent me the court details and his details and also the name of his insurance. Has it all changed now, They must make money on giving this info.
  22. Late or failed to declare SORN? I guess the fine is for failing to declare SORN and the letters were going to the old address? Now you have updated the contact details they are chasing the payment again. Do you know the people at the old address, Maybe they have letters for you.
  23. If you paid online the computers will show the car as being taxed, So your safe from ANPR camera's But if you park at the roadside and the police spot it you may get a ticket, Not sure if traffic wardens can issue a ticket? The new rules give you 5 days providing there has been no break in the licence. After that you do run a small risk. Small maybe but expensive.
  24. I dont think i could talk to someone face to face about it, The embarassent, I wouldnt know where to put myself. I did phone one of the debt people a long time back they said they were busy and would contact me back. Problem was the amount of calls i was getting at that time, I couldnt answer the phone. I read posts of people in similar situations and the advice given to them, That helped relieve some of the fear that they would break in and take anything not nailed down. Being at home sick and watching daytime TV didnt help in that way. Watching the same TV shows repeated and a show about debt and bailiffs. They took almost everything from the persons house to scare them. Then went through the auction valuation where items went for pennies - the bailiffs charges and auction fees, The items usualy didnt make a dent in the amount owed. Even taking items they are not allowed to sell at auction. Not the ideal program to watch when your on sick pay and had to turn the phone off because of the constant calls. Can you tell this has been going around in my head for a long time. What is the worst that they can do, Take me to court and the court will then decide a figure based on my income which is IB that is topped up by income support. Thats it. Doesnt leave a lot. What would a court do in this situation. thanks to everyone, i am really grateful.
  25. Thanks for the advice, I do appreciate it. In my current situation it doesnt look like i will be back in work anytime soon. If i was able to return to work then i what you suggest sounds ideal, Get them to prove the paperwork is in order and remove any unfair charges and interest. If i could afford it i would have gone bankrupt ages ago. If the debt collectors took me to court whats the worse that could happen? I have nothing of value, Council house. If the court ordered me to pay them, Would they have to take into account i owe several other companies and i must also pay them the same amount? Or would it be 1st come 1st served? Would the court look at my finances and make me bankrupt? Shredding the letters was my way of releasing tension after speaking to them on the phone, Then sending me a letter saying they are there to help. Why not setup a payment plan or tell me i could pay as little as £1 and they couldnt refuse it. It was the letter that really flipped me. "here to help" If they had been on the doorstep and said that i would have been arrested for murder. Sorry, I am starting to waffle on again. Shame i didn't find these websites until it was too late. If they take me to court would that not put an end to the calsl & letters, Court will decide what i can afford & thats it? How can it get worse than phone calls at all hours, letters almost daily, Some sent to my neighbours.? Thanks for the advice, I really do appreciate it even if my posts may not reflect it. I am still in a state of how could i let myself get into this position. Angry with myself and the companies for not helping me in the 1st place.
