hi, i have just moved out of my previous address of which i have lived at for 5 years. I have called british gas today to call in my final meter readings as i have a tenant moving in. when i gave them my final readings on my gas and electric meters they told me that the difference was so much that i owed them £2,500. I asked when the last time the meters were read was and they said that they had read them in jan 2009 but because the difference was so large they ignored the reading assuming it was an error and continued to estimate. i said to them, had they told me the readings were high in jan 2009 i would of increased my payments and not incurred such a high amount. i am now wondering if there is any way i can contest this at all? I appreciate i am responsible for my readings but i feel as though this is somewhat unfair as the opportunity was there for them to notify me. can anybody help me? thanks
