Hello, I am hoping somone can help me. On the 22nd May 2009, I was visited by a tv licence enforcement officer as I did not have a tv licence. I agreed to pay by payment card, on the 25th May 2009 I left that address, my partner set up a direct debit for tv licence at the new address. In december of last year I received a letter from a company called Phillips in relation to non payment of court fines. I have never had court fines, so rang the court who advised it was for the tv licence and a summons had been sent on 20th August 2009. As I was not at that address, therefore never got the summons. I called Phillips automated line and offered to pay £10.00 per week. A voice on the line kept saying 'this amount is not enough, and eventually accepted £17.00 per week' I offered to pay by direct debit/payment card. No forms were received in the post, then a few weeks ago I had a letter that had been put through my door by Phillips, saying I now owed them £400.00, the orginal fine I told was £180.00. I emailed Phillips advising them I did not have the £400.00, although we are working we have no spare cash. Also the property is rented, furnished so there are no goods I could give them. Even the telly is the landlords! They kept emailing saying they would not offer instalments. I called the court and the lady on the desk said as I had not received the summons I could write to the court and my case would be re-listed. I have now received a letter back saying that I need to attend court next week. I have managed to get the day off, however as the schools are off I will have my 4 year old in tow. I have tried to get someone to look after him with no luck. I really don't want to take him along, and haven't a clue what to do now. I admit I did not have a licence and undertand I will have to pay my fine, however the jump from £180-£400 is just crazy. If I had received the summons back in august I would have come to an arrangment straight away. Please can anyone help me? Thank You
