  1. Hello, I'm writing about my BT broadband account. I wanted to switch to Orange after getting a better offer from them. When I spoke to BT, I was told that I am in an 18-month contract with them which I verbally entered into when I ordered their service. To exit the contract, I will be charged half the monthly line rental for every remaining month until contract end. For me, this amounts to £30 - not a show-stopper. However, since I (a) don't remember entering into contract, (b) have no documentation to suggest that I am in one (notably, the contract itself!) and © feel that I would not, due to circumstances at the time, have agreed to an 18-month tie-in, I called BT and asked them for proof that I entered a contract (pref. a recording of the phonecall), as well as a copy of the contract. I am waiting to hear back from them. This case is very similar to the cases of PKea: http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/telecoms-mobile-fixed/80936-bt-penalty-charge-termination.html#post718272 and of NASH1 http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/general-consumer-issues/112613-bt-can-they-hold.html PKea won this case (receiving a refund on charges) after BT failed to produce evidence of his verbal agreement. We'll see what they come up with - I'll try and keep this up to date. It appears this is a common issue, please post other related links if you are aware of them.
