  1. Hi guys, I was living in a student residence from 1st August 2006 to the 31st July 2007. All 4 members of the residence paid for their share of the final bill from E.ON and we closed the account over the phone. You can then imagine my surprise when I received a phone call from them toward the end of the 2006 informing me that I owed them over £300. I told them this wasn't possible since I had paid my quarter of the final bill and the account had since been closed. They tried to tell me that I had not paid and that the account was still open as far as they were aware. I told them to check their records to see who had called in and also who had paid. They said that they couldn't see the identities of the payees - to which I replied, if they could not tell who paid then how could they tell it was me that owed them money. I said that I wasn't going to pay and that if they needed evidence that they could contact the landlord who could verify that I had left the property on the 31st July 2007. I thought that would be the end of it but since then I have received various letters from debt collection companies, and then on the 20th November 2008, a letter from Bryan Carter solicitors stating that if payment has not been made in full within the next seven days then proceeding will be issued. What I don't understand is now that the balanced owed to E.ON is £97.56, a far cry from what they originally said. Nevertheless I will not be paying them that amount either (or their solicitors fees). Could someone please advise me on what my next course of action should be since I do not owe them anything and I would not have the money to pay them anyway! Thanks!
