  1. Hi Matt and thanks for your reply. When i moved in there was a card meter which i got changed, i then switched companies to Scottish Power. I've checked the bills and its the same meter serial number from the start of my dealings with SP so as far as they are concerned i've never had a prepayment (card) meter. Would the new meter have a reading of zero when it was installed, cos i got it done for free by Powergen and moved to SP straight after. I'm now off DD and when i pay them it will be for how much i actually use not their estimated shambles of a bill (i wondered what happened to Mystic Meg now i know where she ended up lol) I'm checking my meter regularly and keeping track of the numbers, i have a Rate1 and Rate4: Rate1 seems to be daytime. I am on Economy7, it switches over at 12:30 to the cheaper rate until 07:30, the time seems correct, the meter is currently one hour behind. I Think i've been getting estimated bills for a while, and the meter is showing the total as 29605 (Day 05619 Night 23985) i've been with SP for two and a half years, could this be the grand total with SP? Much abliged for your help. Rob.
  2. I live in a one bedroom flat using electricity only, when i moved in it had a pre-pay meter. On the pre-pay meter i got to know how much electicity all the appliances used and so became very careful with consumption. Without storage heaters turned on i got it down to about £17 a month. I realised the cheapest available tariff was by Direct Debit payment so got the meter changed and i changed supplier to Scottish Power. The bills have steadily increased and have now climbed all the way up to £135 a month and i dont understand how. I dont use any more power than i did before and i cant afford £135 a month as i'm a student. I've insulated the flat as much as possible and its got double glazing so just dont get how my bill can be so much. Scottish Power explain it by saying their prices have gone up but thats just silly. Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.
  3. Hi, not a huge issue here but wanted to know out of interest. A local shop has started to charge 30p for paying with a debit card, the amount was about £13 so i refused and he let me off. I was surprised about this and after telling a lot of people apparently it's more wide spread than i thought. Is this legal and if so why isn't everywhere doing this, i am considering a name and shame of local businesses and getting the message to consumers that they do not have to necessarily pay this fee. Any legal advice would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.
  4. Hi, just needed a little advice for a friend. My friend has just been admitted to hospital and very nearly died, he has had to give up his flat and when he gets out of hospital will be living in a half-way house/rehab clinic. We're sorting out his bills etc and have spoken to BT regarding his phone line and broadband. They say he has 10 months left on the contract and will have to pay over £300 even though he is unable to use it, transfer it to a new address and will probably be in hospital for a good deal of time yet. Is this right and besides that is it ethical for a company to be so greedy under the circumstances? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me.
  5. I sent the "Statute Barred" letter to these morons several weeks ago as they were chasing me for a debt of £2,318. I recieved a letter today stating: "Mackenzie Hall has made the decision not to persue you any further. You will recieve no more letters from Mackenzie Hall." They have made the decision? They are legally unable to is more like it! Brilliant result, so i would like to thank everyone that has helped me sort this out.
  6. Hi everyone, started a thread on this before but cannot find it. 7. I used this approach with Mackenzie Hall recently. The guy was insisting i owed £2,300. I said i would not pay without seeing credible evidence to prove it. I said okay, you owe me £5,000 but i don't have any evidence of that. Whatever he said, i said back to him. Mackenzie Hall: "How much can you pay now?" Me: "How much can you pay me now?" Mackenzie Hall: "We'll accept a settlement of £1,800" Me: "I'll accept a settlement of £3,800" Mackenzie Hall: "We'll start court proceedings" Me: "I'll start court proceedings" Childish i know but still good fun.
  8. Hi, my girlfriend has about 15K of debt from various companies. She made an Arrangement for a debt management company to sort it all out for her and now pays £100 a month. This company seems hopeless and she is still getting letters from the various debters with charges added that are more than a year of payments sometimes. I would really like to take control of it all and my girlfriend agrees but i would like some advice on where to start? Thanks in advance of anyones help. Rob.
  9. Hi guys, thanks for the quick response. Yes, i know now not to ever speak to them on the phone, horrible people. 1: When was the last payment/written acknowledgment of the debt ? That would be around 2003. I moved house in February 2003 and cleared up the debt before i left. 2: What was the debt for ? It was a PC from PC World. It was HFC that did the agreement for the HP. Hope that answers your questions alright.
  10. Hi, I recieved a threatening letter regarding an amount of £2,300 from 2002/2003. I called and the guy said that in 7 days further action would be taken including seizing assets or property if i didn't pay up. I told him it would be impossible to find the money and that i would need some proof. He asked how much i could afford and i said installments of £50 was all i could ever manage. He said i could clear the debt with £1,800 and told me to ring round and try and raise the money. I've had a bit of a read of the site now and just wanted to know where this leaves me? Thanks in advance for anyone's help. Rob.
