  1. These days it is usually refer to drawer and you will have to reissue your cheque, It is very unusal for the unpaying bank to mark a cheque for representation, although to be safe you can wait for their standard letter to tell you.
  2. Yes, late payment charges are penalty charges and you can claim them back.
  3. Thanks people, will let you know the outcome. The ball is with the missus and she has yet to decide whether to get an accountant first or go straight to the tax people.
  4. Allwood. She had child and was off work for 5 years, then did self employed work, untaxed for about 3 years then returned to look after the house, which was about 2 and half years ago.
  5. Hi Wino, correct no accounts drawn up, money banked and then she just let the matter drag on, until now. Gertie, she had not worked for about 5 years, as bringing up kids. She would have been signed off for ni when she left full time employment.
  6. Thanks electron99. All payments were invoiced monthly and paid by cheque which was deposited into a bank acc., so that is fairly straightforward. Will get all the receipts together and see an accountant.
  7. Hi Gertie. Working as a gardener, with invoices and cheques paid into a bank acc but not registered as self employed.
  8. Shywaazz, yes a bit tough, but I am here for advice and realise that she should have been paying the tax. Unfortunately she did not and now she has come clean with me. She has her receipts etc., should she go to the tax people or an accountant? P.S.I am not here to listen to what I want to hear, but true advice. Thanks
  9. It seems I have good reasons to be worried then. Maybe she should just keep quiet, or book us tickets to Australia.
  10. I am sure the ni is a small amount, but worried about the tax amount and fines for not paying it.
  11. Thanks for the reply and that was initially my thought, but you never know what's going to come round the corner and bite you on the a**e. That's my worry.
  12. My partner worked for just under 3 years on a self employed basis, full time, and did not pay tax or stamp. She started this when the kids went to school, but has since returned to look after the home full time. This work finished 2 and a half years ago and I am concerned about any future problems. Should she just keep quiet about it? I worry that if she was to die , god forbid, that the tax man would take the house or demand payment from me. Other than that she has no assets. She earnt approx £30,000- in that period. Please help.
