  1. I would guess that like all traffic sign changes there will be a specified time limit before the old signs become unlawful and both can be used. We're getting an amended TSRGD (Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions) soon, so it might be in that.
  2. Of particular interest is section 7, dealing with the proposed changes to the signing and lining requirements for restrictions covered by TROs http://www.dft.gov.uk/publications/signing-the-way I can see the benefit of making the design of parking signs far less prescriptive, but would be interesting when appealing if there is no set design standard!
  3. Thanks Robby but I'm a bit far away (Dundee) I think they may have wired the EM light up to the ECU light that comes on at the same time!
  4. Thanks for all the responses. Picked the car up yesterday, the engine management light comes on, but is a lot fainter than the rest of the lights and much fainter than it used to be. They haven't addressed the steam issue either. Robby: This was the problem, the EML light didn't come on before starting then go off as usual when the engine was started, however it does now, albeit a lot fainter. The coolant and oil levels are staying the same (I've been checking them daily) So is my next course of action to take it to the Audi dealer and have them check it? Mechanical Engineer friend of mine thinks it might me a mass air flow sensor causing it to run a bit rich, but I'll wait and see if he earns the pint I've bet him
  5. Thanks Sam. The car was advertised on the car dealer’s website and there was nothing misleading in the advert, the mileage was correct and the condition was correctly described. It a 52 plate Audi A6 that I bought on finance and it came with a 1 month warranty for mechanical and gearbox problems. The dealer has been excellent in so much as he’s looked at all the problems I’ve reported, even after the month was up, so I have nothing bad to say in that respect. I’d just like him to fix the problem that it obviously has. And yes to your final question, I’ve got dates of all the times the problems appeared, were reported and the dates the car went into and came out of the garage.
  6. Bought a second hand car two months ago. Less than a week after I picked it up it started overheating, took it back and had a new radiator hose fitted. Didn't have the car for four days while this was being done and the first day I picked it up it started overheating again. Took it back in and it had the water pump replaced. Got the car back another week later and three days later the engine management warning light came on. Took the car back in and the guy told me that it was because they'd replaced water pump so he reset the light. I wasn't convinced because it was ticking over at about 1200rpm instead of he usual 800 and there was a fair amount of steam coming out the exhaust. Took the car back in and was told that because I'd left the oil filler cap off, that the problem was sorted? Now the engine management light doesn't come on at all. (There were a number of fingerprints on the glass in front of the instruments, leading me to think they'd just disconnected the light rather than fixing the problem! I've called and they said they would have another look, is there anything I need to do to ensure this gets fixed? Can I take the car somewhere else to get fixed properly and charge the first garage? Thanks in advance.
  7. Looks perfectly fine to me. See figure 20-1 of Chapter 5 It's difficult to lay thermoplastic screed markings, which have a noticeable thickness to look like the diagrams. There's always going to be one line that looks on top of the other.
  8. I doubt that it'll be enforceable, from the Traffic Signs Manual Chapter 3 The start of the clearway is indicated by signs to diagram 642 together with supplementary plates to diagram 570 indicating the restricted length in miles; this must be to the nearest whole mile if thebe erected on each side of the road or, in the case of a dual carriageway, on the near side and on the central reservation (direction 8). Apologies for the formatting, copy and paste from the pdf.
  9. Are these the terminal signs at the start of the restriction or repeater signs along the affected lenghth?
  10. A trunk road is one that is maintained by central government, other public roads are maintained by local authorities. So the roads in England that are maintained by the Highways Agency are usually trunk roads, in Scotland the trunk road network is maintained by the Scottish Government through the operating companies. There's no differnece as far as drivers are concerned. From CBRD "A [trunk] road [is] maintained at the level of national government. All other roads are the responsibility of local authorities. Trunk road status is never visible to road users - road numbers, signing, classification and primary status are all completely disconnected with trunk status. An attempt was made in Scotland to remove all non-trunk primary routes, thus making trunk routes and primary routes the same, but it failed and the two remain unrelated."
  11. How can you be found guilty with your parking immunity lights on? Sorry, made me laugh that you mentioned that.
  12. The sign and its usage are certainly in the TSM, the would appear to be prescribed signs as there is no mention of them requiring authorisation. Diagram 636.2 page 82 There shouldn't be start of or end of clearway signs used with it! Best check the TRO as others have stated to check the restrictions (or lack thereof )
  13. There's advice that they should be a certain height off the ground, but not explicit regulation. These sound like they were part of a village or town gateway? Very old but still current is Chapter 1. Section 6 paragraph 1.49 is the one you want, remmber that the TSM is only advisory.
  14. DYL are allowed to be 50mm wide and primrose yellow rather than canary yellow. So the lines are probably correct, but may well not be enforceable (see other posts regarding the TRO etc.)
  15. There are minimum sizes for the letters on the signs and this in turn gives the minimum size for a particular layout of the sign itself (as the number of lines and symbols can vary). All the information can be found from page 42 of TSM Chapter 3 The heights are given as the x-height, which is the height of the lowercase x in the transport font.
  16. Apologies for posting a link to a pay site, was posting quickly on my lunch. Glad my idea was useful to you though!
  17. You might find Traffic Signs Manual, Chapter 3 more uselful as it has guidance on how the signs and lines should be installed, the TSRGD is really just the legal backing for the signs and lines with little inof about how they are implimented.
  18. Or use Open Office since it's free and does pretty much what the MS Office does?
  19. I would agree that the signal should either be a green ball to allow the turning movement or the arrows should have an ahead only arrow (possibly with a bus / cycle exemption) for clarity, but the signals comply with the TSRGD (Diagram 3000.8 )
  20. I can't help with the specific problem but just so you know you don't pay for a seat on the train, you're actually paying for carriage from one place to another, so whether you were sitting or standing on 1st you're still *travelling* in first. However I sympathise with the overcrowding, can't be easy every day.
  21. It's not so much that there's a database of routes, all valid routes are worked out according to the rules in the routing guide. So I don't think you'll have much luck asking for your preferred route to be included if it isn't currently a valid route. Good luck anyway though! What route(s) is it anyway - purely for my own curiosity
  22. No problem, I often see the link to the TSRGD so thought it would be worth linking to the Traffic Signs Manual too. Chapter 5 (Lining) - which has all the guidance for double yellows etc. - is also on the DFT site.
  23. Not sure if this has been mentioned before but Chapter 3 of the Traffic Signs Manual (Regulatory Signs 2008 ) has been released Lots of interesting and extensive instructions for signing speed limits, waiting and loading restrictions and red routes. It's useful for the members of this forum but also for me personally as I have to design the damn things! Anyway, enjoy
  24. I usually buy my tickets from the NXEC site as they don't charge any additional fees. Any TOC's website should sell you the tickets you need but check that a) they don;t charge fees and b) it isn't just a front for the trainline. I also think that NXEC has the best ticket selection interface, but that's just me.
  25. Having just seen this thread I would have been onto the phone to the HSE. It may only be a nail and a small piece of slate but what happens when a whole slate falls and gets stuck in someone's head?
