  1. Registered today after googling Mercers and found this forum. I found myself in the situation of spiralling credit and jumped off by taking a second charge on our house with First Plus. They produced the cheques and I forwarded them on to the card companies and banks yesterday. Two of the cards were Barclaycards (one each, wife & me), balances 12,167 & 9,772. Mercers rang last night and I said cheques were in the post, honest, and gave them the amounts. "ok" they said and rang off. 15 minutes later they rang back and said that if I cancelled the cheques and paid by debit card this week I would only have to pay 10,950 & 8800, a saving of 2,189. When asked "how come?" their answer was "by taking off the charges that had been loaded onto the accounts." I stalled them until this morning, rang First Plus who said no but if Mercers will accept cheques then they might agree to stop the Barclaycard cheques and issue cheques to Mercers. Mercers said "no" to cheques because of the time lag which they estimated at 10 days. The prospect of losing 2 grand in discount makes me feel ill. I've rung Barlcaycard who keep referring me to Mercers. Mercers say that the account belongs to them now. I rang Barclaycard again and was put through to the Asia call centre where again they wanted to transfer me to Mercers. I said "no, I want to make a complaint." I'll probably get a call from Mercers or maybe not. Anyway it's all a bit incestuous. Barclays owns Barclaycard, Mercers and First Plus. I just want to know who I should ring or write to in order to make the case for the 2 grand which afterall Mercers were offering as discount to settle. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
