My son, had received a letter back last year claiming he had parked illegally, the charge was £163, I told him to pay it as it be very difficult to prove there was no proper signage, anyway he forgot about it then today he received this letter with a charge of £270.

They say they have obtained a judgement against him and if he wants to avoid it he must pay the charge within one month, if he does that they will contact the court and tell them to remove the judgement.

I have never heard anything remotely like this before.

I have attached a copy of the letter to this post just hope it comes up ok.

they didn't claim he parked illegally, theres no such thing on private land, its a civil speculative invoice so he parked unlawfully...not a criminal offence that results in a magistrates fine.

as stated, ring northants bulk tomorrow, and using the CCJ number ask for a copy of the claimform AND the judgement by email PDF.

I will guess he has moved since the 'offence', else he would have gotten numerous letters before it ever got this far.

hope he told DVLA and updated his licence and V5C else that will be a criminal fine of upto £1000 if they find out!!

You need to know when the CCJ was obtained - it could be the month is already up. They mention passing it on to Direct Collection Bailiffs Ltd - what they fail to tell you is that unless the Judgment is for more than £600 then DCBL will only be acting as a common or garden Debt Collector. If there were to be any involvement by Bailiffs then it would be the County Court Bailiff. They also fail to tell you that using any form of enforcement they list will add an extra £100 or so to the debt.

so what happened regarding the original parking ticket and subsequent paperwork that led to a court claim? why didnt he respond to the claim form, has he moved? A problme with ignoring court forms is they dont go away and then you find that costs that dont really exist are then added to the original amount.

If he had defended and lost the case he would be only paying £150 inc their costs so the rest is just a made up amount to make it even more profitable for them to make these often unjustified claims.

A problem with helping others is often they dont want to help themselves and you do all the running and at the last moment they cant be bothered to do that little bit they need to do but expect you to bail them out yet again. Now you need to have a good conversation about what he wants to do otherwise you will be wasting your time and effort.
