Hi,

Just after some advice regarding parking on my local road.

A business operates on my road, it is generally a quiet road with about 15 terraced houses on each side. During opening hours of the business the customers literally use both sides of the road to park leaving very little space for residents who live on the road to park their cars. It has causes so much traffic on the road and stress to the residents. I have spoken with the council and they have said there is nothing they can do.

Does anyone have any experience in dealing with this kind of issue?

The council means "nothing they can do under current parking regulations" presumably. Potentially they could, for example introduce a residents only parking scheme on one side of the road. But that might not have the support of all local residents. Residents parking zones can be a pain in the backside if you have visitors or tradesmen in.

If you think a residents only parking restriction might help and other residents agree it's probably a political matter that you need to discuss initially with your Ward Councillor. The more people from your street that raise it the more likely the Councillor is to do something.

It costs a council tens of thousands to introduce a resident permit scheme so be careful what you wish for as you will have to be the ones to pay for this in the long run.

What you need to do is look at other aspects of planning law to see if that can place restrictions upon nay commercial vehicles visiting but will have little effect upon joe public using the street to park.

You havent said how it cuases problems for the residents, surely they are away at work duirng the day or is there an overrepresentation of retired people there? Not moving your cars to prevent their customers parking in the first place would have an effect, co-operating with them to resolve this once you have looked but not acted on other solutions would also be productive. if they dont want to be helpful then they are the ones who will suffer when restrictions are brought in.

A residents' parking scheme is the only realistic solution as far as I can see. There's no other way you can have priority on the spaces, and you can't stop people parking there if they are allowed to. Of course you won't have to pay for it yourselves - the costs would come out of the common public purse, but you will have to pay for your annual permits if a scheme is introduced.

You will find if you go down the route of Residents Parking Permits depending on where you live you may well have to pay the council every year for the permit, and this can be expensive.

Councils will always use the excuse "there is nothing they can do"

The road outside of your property as long as there are No Parking restrictions of any nature can be used by anybody for parking

Aren't you conradicting yourself? As you correctly say, anybody can park there - so how is the council's "there's nothing we can do" an excuse? It's true! If you're entitled to park there, you're entitled to park there.

Re-Phrase, as long as there are No Parking restrictions of any nature, any body can park including the customers of the business in your street, residents do not have any priority.Should you and the other residents decide to approach the Council to put in place a residents parking scheme, depending on the council in question it can be very expensive.
