They're trying to recover a sum of money in respect of four years of energy consumption from 2012 to 2016???!! And it's now 2018?

You probably don't need to worry about it but I would send them an SAR anyway. Were you a customer of theirs?

Energy backbilling: Your rights | Ofgem

https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/.../household...electricity...energy-bills/energy-backbilling-...

A backbill is a 'catch-up' bill sent to you by your gas or electricity supplier when you haven't been correctly charged for your energy use. Backbills can be for any amount, but we have put in place rules which define when your supplier can charge you, and to prevent backbilling beyond 12 months.

mostly agree, if they can separate the last bit of that bill and you were their customer at the time then you will owe them some money. They cnat just send out an unitemised bill for several years worth of god knows what and think it is a proper bill. I would think that as they wont be able to provide you with an accurate account of rthe last billing period they should give up but as they have an expensive computer system to avoid actual thinking they wont do that.

Expect more waste paper regardless of what you say to them.
