Last week I placed an order via the Footlocker website for a limited edition item.

While checking out they make it clear in the page that your item is being held for 10 minutes while you checkout and to check out quick so you don’t lose it.

Earlier this week my order was cancelled.

After eventually getting through to someone to speak to in their customer services I was told:

‘we cannot live track our stock so we cannot hold items during checkout’

and that the message during checkout was ‘essentially a lie customer services are aware of’.

Is there anything I should do?

I’m annoyed I stopped looking for the item anywhere else because I thought I had a guaranteed order with someone else because mine was ‘held’ during checkout and I feel they shouldn’t promote this obvious lie during checkout, especially when they’re totally aware they can’t do what it says in their site.

Since when were Footlocker not a genuine reputable retailer? They even have physical shops in the UK.

For the OP query, I don't think there's really anything you can do. Most likely they can track general stock most of the time but high demand limited edition items probably break the stock checking system. I suspect that at the time they were taking orders they just had an estimate on how many items they would receive and took more pre-orders than their allocation ended up being, so orders were probably processed on a first come first served basis.

complaint to Advertising Standards Authority is probably the only satisfaction you will get from this, they cant be forced to sell you anything, let alone something they dont have but they can be forced to look at how their sales patter appears to make promises they know they cant keep.
