In October 2016 our car (a 2006 Peugeot 407) needed work doing on the brakes.

Both rear disks (which have wheel bearings integrated in to them), rear pads and one caliper.

Roll on to now. We had an issue with the brake/caliper on the side that was replaced which they did sort free of charge. However, the wheel bearings on the rear drivers side are failing. This was only changed 22 months ago (and have done approx. 10,000 miles) and should have lasted up to 70,000 miles. It is not a wear and tear part. It needs replacing and will cost £154 to do so all because the bearings are integrated in to the brake disk.

I am really ticked off that we have to pay again for the same part when it shouldn't have failed. The disk on the left rear, and it's bearings, are still in tip top condition.

Halfords say they only guarantee parts for 12 months but I'm just wondering if something like this is covered by the Consumer Rights Act or if I'm just going to have to take the hit and pay out again?

yes I think you do have case for them to atleast give you some discount if not the whole thing free

Are you sure it's combined? A quick Google shows bearings separate from discs, the bearings come in about £20

Absolutely they are integrated, yes. Paid £550 last time for the two disks,pads and one caliper. I know eBay show them separate but they're really not.

That's why I'm so annoyed they have failed as they were replaced last time along with the disks (obviously).

It's going in the garage on Wednesday so I'm going to have to pay up front but I'm thinking a letter/email to head office to see of i can claim some or all of the cost back.

Its not the brake disk, it's the wheel bearings that are part and parcel of the actual disk. Honestly, they're not separate. We tried loads of garages 2 years ago and every one of them explained about the bearings and that's why the disks are pricey.

Ok, seems odd there are two different options, since they are Brembo I assume it's one of the faster versions?

Anyway with the eurocarparts discount it's only £100 for the pair, which sadly you need to do as the discs should be matched, also new pads at the same time.

Is it Brembo ones that are fitted? If so I would contact them too see what they say. Brembo are top end so should certainly last longer than you have had.

They're not replacing both because the other one is still in great condition. You'd expect that if one fails the other would too (or at least be close to failing) but it's not. That'd also cost me in excess of £300 anyway which is unacceptable. They didn't say whether the pads will be replaced or not, but we have free brake pads for life with Halfords anyway so I'll make sure they do.

You should Never change only one disc on an axle. They are always fitted in pairs. They may look in good condition but it's 2 years old

Oh. I can't afford both to be done so it's either I get the one done or don't have a car which isn't an option as my partner has a 12 mile commute to work.

They're not Brembo disks. Or at least I wouldn't have thought so. That was just an example of the type of disks Halfords installed.

get it fixed and trade in for a different car if you worried they might fail again for bearings
