Paramedics to be given body cameras to protect them from abuse

The measures are part of a new wellbeing pledge for NHS staff and aim to reduce cases of physical and verbal abuse against the most at risk NHS workers.

Paramedics will be given body cameras as part of a new wellbeing pledge ahead of the NHS’s 70th birthday.

NHS employers will also introduce fast-access systems to speed up access to free mental health support and physiotherapy for their staff.

The measures are part of the 10-year plan that the NHS will agree over the next 6 months as part of the planned £20.5 billion increase to NHS funding by 2023. The measures aim to:

Too right, although it won't stop the abuse, just document it for police prosecution.

Who ever heard of someone getting a job at the Jobcentre? The unemployed are sent there as penance for their sins, not to help them find work!

I think it's a real shame that this is being done but we now live in a world where violence to members of the emergency services is 'normal' With my rose tinted glasses on, it wasn't like this in the old days. Respect was given to the Police, Ambulance staff and firefighters.

Lets hope that the cameras worn will be hi def so they can be used in prosecutions

Over the last twenty years as a frontline Paramedic I have seen a massive change for the worst in how people treat us now. I for one can not wait to wear a body cam and stabvest as part of my day to day uniform. I work alone on a car so this will afford me some protection.

I must say that it's gives me a nice warm feeling to see all of the support that is coming our way over this. Please do not worry about confidentiality issues we won't have access to the footage and I should imagine it will be restricted to a couple of people, just like now with the footage that's recorded in the ambulance when we press the emergency button.

I'm a supporter too, Spudzulu. I can't understand the mindset of the people who carry out violence - they should be grateful that we have dedicated people like paramedics.

Bless ya. It's true that it's difficult to understand why anyone would want to harm someone sent to help them.

I am keen to reassure people that thereis no risk to their privacy. Camera or no camera, we deal with highly confidential situations every single day and there's no way I would do anything to breach that trust.

The sad part about the cameras is that they do not prevent attacks as a drunk probably would not care either way. Why is it that they think cameras help prevent crime? IMHO there should be more trained police on the ground.

You will be surprised just how quickly people modify their behaviour when they know they are being recorded, recent Police research indicates this. It will not stop everything but it will provide bsck up to any allegation of assault that I make.

Last year I was punched and spat on my two males, they got a caution "because it's your word against theirs!" Please note that was a CPS charging decision not the Police. They were as angry as me.
