Hi

Asking for a friend

Can someone please confirm that a straightforward passport renewal doesn't need a counter signature.

There's no change of name or much change to appearance so from what I can see just need to fill forms out and supply new pictures?

They've got an appointment at the passport office on Wednesday so just want to make sure everything is correct before travelling up there.

Thanks

The link Andyorch posted has this:-

When you need someone else to sign your form and photo

You must get your form and one of your 2 photos signed if you’re applying for a:

first adult passport

first child passport

replacement for a lost, stolen or damaged passport

renewal of a passport for a child aged 11 or under

renewal of a passport if your appearance has changed and you can’t be recognised from your existing passport

I'm puzzled by that though. Straightforward renewal of a passport doesn't usually require you to visit the passport office. If it needs replacing - eg previous one lost/stolen - it might need a visit. Passport Office distinguish between 'renewing' and 'replacing' a passport. Different procedures.

Even with a renewal Passport office say: "If you can’t be recognised from the photo in your existing passport, get your application form and 1 of your photos signed by someone else to prove your identity." [EDIT Just noticed HB has already said this].
