Hi, I hope you lot can help as I've lurked here but only decided to sign up, I have GAD so this has honestly been keeping me up for the past 3 days.

I bought a Corsa from a guy 20 miles away, I don't know if he was an actual trader or a private guy, he said he buys cars and resells them, I collected the car from his house and paid £2150 via bank transfer.

Once getting home I only noticed he gave me the V5 full, rather than just the new keeper details.

The problem is the registered keeper details don't show his name & address, it's the guy he bought the car from.

Okay, so at this point I assume he just didn't register it in his name to avoid adding another keeper. HOWEVER, the section 9 aka 'yellow slip' is missing, is this a logbook loan or something?

I rang him today and he said he's just posting the yellow slip and told me to fill in section 8 and just only sign my bit, and leave the registerekd keeper signature blank and they will process it as normal.

I'm really scared as this is my first car, which he knew, and I feel like perhaps I've been [problem]med and about to loose my 2 years savings? :(

My take on it is that he didn't register it to avoid adding another keeper, when I left he posted the section 9 / yellow slip to unregister the previous keeper so that I wouldn't need a signature when it arrives at DVLA?

I mean I know nothing about all of this so I'm probably wrong, the interesting part is I thought the yellow one was for traders, and not someone who just buys/sells, I noticed this because I looked his name/company up on the company house and it's dissolved a few years back so surely he can't be a trader?

Sorry for the wall of spam but at this point I can't even sleep, I feel like I'm waiting 4-6 weeks to hear back from DVLA saying I can't do this and that I've been [problem]med / a loan company sending a letter saying I owe them xyz.

Suggest you obtain a HPI check and find out history of the car.

He mixed up the two parts.

He should have given you the green slip only, however, you can register the car in your name online in a couple of minutes.

Check if the hpi comes clean and if so, then register the car online.

Not unusual for a traded in car to have the yellow bit missing on v5.

He doesn't need to have a fancy garage to be a trader, he can buy and sell cars from his home, he's still a trader.

And never pay a large amount via bank transfer like that again

I already got a HPI check from confused.com and all checked out, but I was told by a friernd that even if it comes clean they can still put out for a logbook loan after they sell it with a yellow slip

How come? I'd think bank transfer is better than cash

It is better than cash, but still doesn't offer you protection.

It is only better than cash in that someone ELSE (not the seller!) can't bash you over the head and take it from you, but you can still be cheated and (if paid by bank transfer) you have next to no comeback.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Ive done the online thing and it says I'll get it within 2 weeks or 5 days usually.

Once my logbook arrives with me as the registered keeper, say he kept the yellow slip to try and fool me, with the new logbook in my name, will he be able to do anything with that yellow slip, will it become invalid with the new logbook in my name, or can he still take a logbook loan for example?

the car will be in your name unless he contests it. It then becomes a criminal matter. However i very much doubt that would happen, and youre just worrying because you have no experience and this is your first car.

Thank you, hopefully it doesn't come to this haha, you've really helped me calm down and I think it was just because of 2k car and a 2k insurance it is a lot of money for me, saved it for a year on a £3.50 apprenticeship until I got my full time job so it was a lot of effort and a big loss if it happened

He can't get a logbook loan with the yellow strip.

To get a logbook loan you need the v5c without any bits missing.

Anyway, on a 2k car he would be lucky to get a £500 loan.

Oh I didn't realise, I thought he could just sell/give the registered keeper to a loaner with the yellow slip since at the top it says 'sell to a trader, insurer or xyz'
