Hi - Does anyone out there know if you have to pay council tax when you are travelling in a touring caravan and do not own or rent a property? This would just be for a short period of time. Thanks.

Not on a caravan.

I think on canal boats ( lived in as a main home) which are moored in one place for more than a month, the owner/occupier is supposed to register for council tax, but for touring caravans where you can move in minutes without there being any registered allocated siting, then it would be difficult to enforce. A council might have powers under legislation to charge a caravan occupier council tax, if the caravan was on a piece of land for an extended period of months, but I doubt whether they would do it.

We could do with some help from you.

Council Tax is due on an occupied caravan pitch, not the caravan itself - although the person living in the caravan on the pitch would be liable for any chargrge.

If the caravan stays in one place for an extended time and it is being used as a 'sole or main residence' the VOA (not the council) can band the pitch. The council tax charge would then be due whilst the pitch was occupied.
