Hi guys,

I was hoping that someone would be able to help me.

I currently claim carers allowance for my disabled adult son.

I was thinking about doing a part time course through the OU.

The course is pay time and I could apply for a part time study loan to pay the fees.

I don't claim any out of work benefits but I do claim child benefit and child tax credit for my 15 year old son.

My question is

can I continue to claim carers allowance and apply for a part time study loan to pay for the course fees?

Thanks

Me x

You should probably ask the Carers Allowance people, but as far as I can tell you will be OK to do what you plan. To get CA you must not be earning more than about £116 per week from employment, and you must not be in full time education (FTE). FTE from a CA point of view means more than 21 hours per week of study. A loan to pay your fees should not affect your CA claim.

My son has just completed his OU degree and has received Carer's allowance throughout. So long as you are still caring for more than 35 hours a week, it will make no difference if you study part time.

Make sure you tell the OU that you are a carer and they will provide any necessary extra help, e.g. sending you notes from tutorials you can't attend due to caring responsibilities.
